Awareness rally on eye donation

Coinciding with the observance of National Eye Donation Day recently, the Rotary Club of Pondicherry Central, in association with Jothi Eye Care Foundation at Jothi Eye Care Centre organised an eye donation awareness rally here.

Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy flagged off the rally at Kamaraj Statue near Raja Theatre Junction. Nearly 1,100 students from schools, colleges and paramedical colleges along with 150 Rotarians from all the 13 Rotary Clubs in Puducherry participated in the rally that culminated at the Gandhi Statue on Beach Road.

Dr. Vanaja Vaithianathan, Medical Director and Consultant, Ophthalmic surgeon, Jothi Eye Care Centre said, “Nearly 30 lakh people wait for eye donation every year in the country. But, there were hardly 40,000 donors. It was important to increase the number of donors.

The students and Rotarians pledged to donate their eyes. “Family pledge forms were distributed to students in 20 schools” she said.
