Many have over 10 years of service

A large number of casual employees of the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) may face retrenchment by end-October at the completion of the bank’s merger with the State Bank of India (SBI).

While the bank union leaders fear that around 1,000 casual workers may be hit, SBT management sources say the numbers are still being computed.

“As directed by the SBI, our management will be forced to jettison more than 1,000 casual employees, many who have been with the bank for 10 or more years,” Aniyan Mathew, President, State Bank of Travancore Employees Union, told The Hindu .many who have been with the bank for 10 or more years,

List given

“We have already given a list of 955 casual employees to the Regional Labour Commissioner (Central) Thiruvananthapuram,” said Mr. Mathew.

In an advisory to the five associate banks, including the State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad, and SBT, that are to be merged with it, the SBI has asked for the number of such employees in each bank. When contacted, a senior SBT official involved in the merger process said the actual numbers are being tabulated.
