Singer and music composer Vishal Dadlani Wednesday apologised to Jain monk Tarun Sagar at his ashram in Chandigarh as per the Jain community’s tradition of seeking ‘Panch Mafee’.
For forgiveness, Dadlani was asked by the Jain monk to bow his head and repeat after him: “Mein haath jod kar maafi mangta hoon, mein sir jhuka ke maafi mangta hoon, mein kaan pakad ke maafi mangta hoon, mein dil se mafi magta hoon, mein kabhi kise ke dharmik bhavnaon ko aahat nahi karunga.”
In August, Dadlani (43) had mocked the Jain leader’s address to the Haryana Assembly, calling it “mockery of democracy” in a tweet, which was deleted by him later. He was booked by Haryana Police under different sections of the IPC.
Urging the members of the Jain community to withdraw cases against Dadlani, Tarun Sagar said: “Right from the day the controversy erupted, I have been saying that I didn’t feel bad or hurt by Vishal’s comment. But the Jain community was hurt. It was their demand that he should come to me in person and seek apology as per the Jain community’s tradition. Anyone can make a mistake. If a person realises their mistake, one should forgive such a person.”
Dadlani, meanwhile, said that his remark was a result of “negative” information circulating on the Internet. “Some sections of the media had published the lecture in a negative manner. My opinion was based on those news items,” said Dadlani.
Asked if there has been a rethink on his decision to “quit active political work”, he said: “At the moment I am thinking of coming back here and meeting Muni ji again,” he said.
