A youth was shot at by four armed persons over an old enmity between two groups at Haripur Kudan village in Dera Bassi on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway here on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Dalbir Singh (25), a resident of Mehmadpur village in Dera Bassi. He received three bullet injuries, two in his stomach and one in the arm. Dalbir is currently admitted in PGI, Chandigarh, where his condition is stated to be stable. The incident took place around 12.45 noon, when Dalbir was driving from his village to Haripur Kudan in his Alto car, when four persons came in a Figo car and stopped his car. The accused damaged the car using sharp weapons and began firing at Dalbir.

Police said 12 rounds of shots were fired, out of which three bullets hit Dalbir in his stomach and arm, while one bullet whizzed past him. A large number of residents of nearby villages gathered after hearing the gun shots and the accused fled the spot. Dalbir was rushed to the hospital in Dera Bassi, from where he was referred to PGI, Chandigarh.

“It is a case of old enmity between the two groups. The attack was carried out by a group led by two persons, who have been identified as Rana and Bhuppi,” said station house officer, Dera Bassi Police Station, Deepinder Singh.

Dalbir is also the complainant in a previous case against the accused, which was registered after a firing incident on August 13. The two groups had clashed and four persons had suffered bullet injuries in the incident. The police had booked 12 persons for the incident on Dalbir’s complaint. However, no arrest was made.

Festive offer

The police said the preliminary investigation has revealed that gunshots were fired from both sides. “We have recovered a country-made pistol and three shells from the victim’s car. One live cartridge was also recovered. Dalbir might have fired in his defence,” said Singh.
