Sonic boom from military planes scares blast-weary New Yorkers

A convoy of military planes returning from an exercise flew too low over eastern Queens, creating a sonic boom and scaring edgy residents, cops said.

The F22 Raptors, which are used by the US Air Force, flew overhead at about 2:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon and were going so fast that it sounded like an explosion in the sky.

“Heard a loud explosion in queens village,” Humphrey Makomva wrote on Twitter. “Lots of sirens.”

The NYPD, FDNY, and Nassau County emergency services suddenly received dozens of calls and dispatched personnel to cover them all. They couldn’t find the source of the noises and then released that the noise was the planes overhead.
