Owner of the Mercedes, has been arrested by Homicide Section of the Kolkata Police Detective Department.
The owner of the Mercedes that was involved in an accident with a scooter at Hazra crossing on Sunday leading to a rampage inside a housing complex following a youth's death in the accident, was arrested today.
Varun Maheswari, the owner of the Mercedes E-250, has been arrested by Homicide Section of the Kolkata Police Detective Department this afternoon, a senior police officer said today.
It was learnt that Maheswari, during questioning today claimed that he was driving the Mercedes when the accident took place at the crossing in the southern part of the city at 2.55 am on Sunday, he said.
However, CCTV footages on the crossing had shown a woman behind the wheels.
"We are talking to him and trying to find out what actually happened on that morning. We are corroborating his version with the CCTV footages on the road," he said.
Maheswari, in his early 20s, is a resident of Dhakuria in south Kolkata, while the Mercedes was registered in the name of a company having its office on AJC Bose Road.
Avijit Pandey (22), the rider of the scooter succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while pillion riders - Ramdev Yadav (22) and Mithilesh Yadav (25) were discharged after treatment.
Eleven persons were arrested by the Kolkata Police for rampaging nearly 70 vehicles inside the parking lot of the residential complex on Panditia Road assuming that the Mercedes, after the accident had gone inside the complex.
CCTV footage inside the complex showed that over 120-150 locals barged into the premises and rampaged the vehicles.
All the 11 have been charged under sections dealing with unlawful assembly, rioting, damaging government property and stealing.
