Wits protesters shoot down suggestion of marching to Luthuli House

Johannesburg - Students at the University of the Witwatersrand have decided not to march to the ANC's headquarters in Johannesburg, says outgoing deputy SRC president Omhle Ntshingila.

"Going to Luthuli House was suggested last night, but after discussions students decided against it," she told News24.

Ntshingila also confirmed that students have refused to meet with management. The institution's head of communications Shirona Patel told news channel eNCA that management was struggling to meet with student leaders to discuss the protest.

"We take our mandate from students and they have not given us instruction to engage with management, so we won't do that," said Ntshingila.

Students are yet to gather for the day but there is also no clarity on their planned activities for Wednesday. On Tuesday, violence broke out when they clashed with private security at the main campus in Braamfontein.

The students, who are calling for free education, have been protesting since Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande made an announcement on fee adjustments on Monday.

Wits has since suspended its academic programme for the week, a move which Ntshingila admits might affect their movement negatively.

"We want to mobilise but realise it will be difficult with the suspension."
