Dengue-chikungunya outbreak in Delhi: What were you doing for two months, NGT asks NDMC

At least 19 people are reported to have succumbed to dengue and chikungunya in Delhi.

The National Green Tribunal on Wednesday lashed out at NDMC and other municipal bodies in the backdrop of the dengue and chikungunya outbreak in the national capital. “What were you doing for two months? There is no action plan and everyone in Delhi is getting sick,” NGT is quoted telling NDMC officials by news agency ANI.

Expressing displeasure to the measures taken by municipal authorities in Delhi, NGT said, “The ground reality is horrible. Don’t show us fabricated registers.” The tribunal has ordered setting up of a principal committee to tackle the problem and the formation of district level committee to check preventive measures being taken.

The court has also ordered the district committee to submit a report within 15 days. The development comes at a time when the city is coping with a crisis situation because of a surge in number of dengue and chikungunya cases. At least 19 people are reported to have succumbed to the diseases and more than 1,500 affected in the city.

Ever since the first death was reported, there has been the usual war of words between the BJP-dominated MCDs and the AAP-led Delhi government.

The Delhi High Court earlier this week asked the government authorities to ensure that hospitals, both government and private, did not deny treatment to patients. The High Court bench also asked authorities to consider suggestions given by petitioner Advocate Shahid Ali to fix responsibility of the area officials and safai karamcharis to ensure no water is found collected in garbage dumped in open areas.
