Junior World Shooting Cup: Panchkula girl, DAV College student duo win gold in 10m Air Pistol team event

The Indian team consisting of Deswal, Goel and Nithave claimed the gold medal with a combined score of 1122.

Yashaswini Deswal from Panchkula and Ludhiana girl Malaika Goel, who is presently studying in DAV College, Chandigarh, along with Harshada Nithave have won a gold medal in the 10 M Air Pistol team event in the Junior World Shooting Cup being held at Gabala, Azerbaijan.

The Indian team consisting of Deswal, Goel and Nithave claimed the gold medal with a combined score of 1122, while Turkey won the silver medal with 1104 points. Uzbekistan bagged the bronze medal in the team event with 1,086 points.

Deswal (18), who had earlier won a silver medal in the individual event in 10 M Air Pistol event in the Junior World Cup in Germany in May this year, has topped the qualification round in the individual event with a score of 378, but finished sixth, while Goel came seventh.

Yashasvini’s father S S Deswal, an IPS officer with Haryana police, said: “Yashaswini has topped the qualification round and shot well in the round. She had 10 perfect shots in that round and we were expecting a medal from her in the individual event also. She along with Malaika made the Indian team proud by winning the gold in the team event. It will help her ahead of the tough domestic circuit.”

In the individual event, Deswal started well in the final shooting a score of 29.2 in the first competition stage in the final round, but two shots of 8.7 and 8.9 hurt her chances in the second competition stage in the final. The following rounds saw her shooting only one score above 10 and she finished sixth.

Goel, the 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, too had a score of 29.2 in the first competition stage in the final round, but fell behind in the later rounds.

Deswal started the sport in 2011 and went on to become the national champion in the 58th National Shooting Championship held in Pune last year under the guidance of her coach Tejinder Singh Dhillon.

She also starred in the Indian team’s bronze medal finish in the Junior World Cup held in Suhl, Germany, in June last year.
