AHMEDABAD: A two-month-old infant, Mohammed, succumbed to dengue on Tuesday and his 24-year-old mother, Shabana Ansari, has also fallen victim to vector-borne disease, is battling for her life. Mohammed is the fifth casualty of dengue in the city since July.
Mohammed was admitted to VS Hospital on September 16, after he was diagnosed with dengue but died in four days, said Dr Kuldip Joshi, resident medical officer (RMO) of VS Hospital where the boy and his mother were admitted.

Mohammed's father Saeed Ansari, who runs a tailoring shop in Juhapura, said his son first got a high fever last week and then developed other complications like vomiting. "We first approached a Juhapura-based doctor, who advised us to test for dengue, which returned positive on Friday. We immediately admitted him to VS Hospital, where he was put on a ventilator and today the doctor told us that he has passed away," said Ansari.
Ansari added, "My wife was also diagnosed with dengue a couple of days ago, and her condition is also critical."
On Sunday, a resident of Amraiwadi, Chirag Prajapati (17) died after battling dengue for over a month. He was admitted to a private hospital in Bapunagar, late on Friday, where he was brought in a critical condition.
The situation is alarming in the city as the health department of Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation (AMC) has found wide prevalence of Type-3 dengue virus, which is wreaking havoc in Delhi.
