Sports roundup: Burbank water polo holds off Calabasas for win

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burbank 10, Calabasas 9: The Bulldogs built a lead and had to stop a comeback attempt Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Bulldogs had a 9-5 lead after three quarters, but were outscored, 4-1, in the fourth.

Alex Banjarjyan paced Burbank (2-2) with three goals, while Brandon Wilson and Varuzhan Bibulyan added two goals apiece and Wilson tallied five assists. In goal, Misak Voskanyan made nine saves.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs d. Glendale, 26-24, 25-15, 25-14: Marin Grote had 13 kills to lead the Indians to a Pacific League win Tuesday afternoon on the road.

The Indians improved to 5-2, 3-1 in league.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel (San Diego) Invitational: Timothy Wells placed fifth in 15 minutes, 39 seconds in the senior race Saturday at the 2.95-mile course at Balboa Park.

Patrick Wells was 36th (16:43) and Daniel Fendrich was 42nd (16:52) for Burroughs.

In the Division I junior race, Burroughs finished second in the team standings with 140 points, trailing just Loyola (60).

Jagdeep Chahal was eighth (15:51), Jacob Calderon and Andrew Hoxsie tied for 24th (16:36), Jeron Staker was 51st (17:16) and Ethan Brown was 52nd (17:17).

Burbank in Woodbridge Invitational: The Bulldogs received a 24th-place finish in 15 minutes, 52 seconds from Angel Flores in the “A” Blue race at the meet Saturday at Silverlakes Sports Park.

He was followed by Jahir Olvera (56th; 16:24), Nick Glover (57th; 16:24), Sergio Bernal (94th; 17:03) and Peter Al- Hasani (119th; 17:39).

Bellarmine-Jefferson in Woodbridge Invitational: Bell-Jeff’s Nick Montijo finished 10th in the sophomore race in 17 minutes, 8 seconds at the event Friday at Silverlakes Sports Park.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel (San Diego) Invitational: Heidi Eligio placed 17th in 17 minutes, 17 seconds in the senior race Saturday on the 2.75-mile course at Balboa Park.

She was followed by Dru Kim (70th; 19:19) and Molly Stapelfeldt (79th; 19:32).

In the Division I junior race, Ana Villalpando was 61st (18:50).

Burbank in Woodbridge Invitational: Gabby Collins placed 20th in 18 minutes, 48 seconds in the “A” Blue race at the meet Saturday at Silverlakes Sports Park.

She was followed by Jamie Giammichele (58th; 19:42), Natalie Danao (90th; 20:21), Jordan Delgado (120th; 21:01) and Sofya Arakelyan (140th; 22:03).

Bellarmine-Jefferson in Woodbridge Invitational: Valarie Zavala placed seventh in 18 minutes, 23 seconds in the varsity Division IV “A” race Friday at Silverlakes Sports Park.

Dalia Rincan was 56th (20:46) and Claire Borot was 58th (20:50) for Bell-Jeff.

In the sweepstakes race Saturday, Caitlyn Couch finished 82nd in 18:10.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Burbank 233, Golden Valley 252, Canyon Country Canyon 252: Amy Tran fired a one-over-par 32 to lead the Bulldogs to a nonleague win Monday at El Cariso Golf Course.

Gaby Tozcek shot a 59, Cassie Vargas and Kaylee Jensen carded 47s and Macie Jensen had a 48 for Burbank.
