SURAT: A 20-year-old woman, who had set herself ablaze in Limbayat area following some domestic quarrel, succumbed to the burns on Tuesday.
Following a complaint lodged by the woman, Pooja's, father, the police arrested her husband Sandip, father-in-law Ishwar, mother-in-law Rekha and brother-in-law Manohar.
Both the families are natives of Shevge village in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district.
Pooja was married to Sandip Patil of Maharashtra around 18 months. However, two months ago the couple and their families had shifted to Surat and were living in Mayur Society in Limbayat. Sandip was working in an embroidery making unit. However, Pooja wanted to live separately from her in-laws and was constantly pressurizing Sandip. The duo even had quarrels over the issue, police said.
On September 3, Pooja's father came down from Maharashtra and they had even lodged a complaint of domestic violence against her in-laws. However, on September 4, when he went for lunch to a relative's house, Pooja closed the door and doused herself with kerosene and set ablaze.
She was rushed to the New Civil Hospital (NCH) for treatment. However, she had suffered nearly 60 per cent burns.
B M Parmar, police inspector, Limbayat said, "We have arrested the four members of Pooja's husband's family and are investigating the case. They have been booked them for abetment to suicide."
