SAMBALPUR: In a daring raid, robbers broke into the Bank of Baroda, Bargarh branch late on Monday night and made away with Rs 40 lakh.
The matter came to light when a bank employee opened the branch, near Bhatli Chhak under Bargarh Town police limits, on Tuesday morning. He found an almirah open. He informed the higher authorities about it. Subsequently, the police was informed.
Police said an iron rod of a window was found broken.
Police suspect the miscreants might have broken the iron rod and entered the bank through the window. They destroyed the CCTV camera installed in the branch, before fleeing with the cash. No security guard was posted at the branch, said police.
Sub-divisional police officer (Bargarh) Suresh Nayak said, "The matter is being probed. The branch authorities are yet to calculate the exact amount robbed from the branch. Dog squad and forensic team had also visited the spot".
The bank was supposed to be shifted to a new building. The officials had also started shifting the furniture and other articles, including the locker, to the new building. The cash was kept in an almirah. The branch was supposed to be operational at the new building from Wednesday.
This is the second bank robbery in Bargarh district in the last two months. On August 5, eight armed persons robbed jewellery worth more than Rs 50 lakh and cash around Rs 16 lakh from State Bank of India, Ruchida branch, under Ambabhona police limits in Bargarh district.
