PUNE: A MCOCA accused escaped from the Sassoon general hospital on Tuesday morning.
The accused, Somnath Vishnu Raut, is an undertrial, who was languishing in the Yerawada central prison for last two years. He was admitted to Sassoon's ward number 14 on the second floor with gastric problem.
The policeman on duty, constable Sachin Taru, tied his handcuff around the bed and went to the loo.
Raut managed to pulled out his hand from the handcuff and escaped.
When Taru returned to the ward, he found Raut missing. He looked around in the hospital and on the premises, but failed to trace him.
Taru registered a complaint against Raut under section 224 (escaping from lawful custody) of the Indian Penal Code with the Bund Garden police station.
Sub-inspector Deepak Karande said the Pune rural police had arrested Raut under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). He was lodged in Yerawada jail since two months. The Pune city and rural police have launched a hunt to arrest him.
