Fifty-seven people were taken into preventive custody across the district on Tuesday in connection with the Cauvery waters dispute.

While the Mysuru district police arrested 33 persons, the city police arrested 24. They include known miscreants and troublemakers.

The police began rounding them up in the Tuesday, even before the Supreme Court began hearing the matter. The arrested persons will be produced in court and sent to judicial custody, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) H.T. Shekhar told The Hindu .

Meanwhile, security was tightened across the city with the police deploying additional forces from the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and the City Armed Reserve (CAR), besides sending forces to guard government offices, railway stations, bus stands, commercial complexes, schools and colleges.

The district police say they have taken precautions to prevent protests from going out of hand. Apart from increasing the number of security personnel, the number of videographers deployed to cover the protests has doubled from 30 to 60.

Superintendent of Police Ravi Channannavar has warned trouble-makers with stern action, including booking criminal cases against them in the event of any violence.
