Pune: 4 dead, 33 injured in state bus-truck collision on Talegaon-Chakan road

Four persons died and 33 were injured when a speeding truck rammed into a state transport bus on Tuesday afternoon on Talegaon-Chakan Road. The accident was so severe that portions of both the truck as well as bus were badly mangled and those who died were literally crushed by the impact of the accident.

The accident happened near village Malwadi on Talegaon-Chakan Road at about 1.30 pm. Five persons injured in the head-on collision is said to be in serious condition while others are recuperating in four private hospitals located in the area.

According to local police, drivers of both the vehicles managed to escape in the nick of time before the collision. According to police, MSRTC Bus Shirur-Kurla was passing from the narrow road near village Malwadi when a speeding truck came from the opposite direction and rammed into the bus. Drivers’ cabins of both the vehicles were completely disfigured.

“Locals told us that they had great difficulty in rescuing the injured as the seats were entangled due to the impact. With the help of the locals, the injured were transported to four different hospitals in the area. Condition of five is said to be critical,” said Vikram Pasalkar, Police Sub Inspector who is investigating the case.

According to Pasalkar, the truck driver was trying to overtake another vehicle in full speed when it collided with the bus. Among dead are Bhiku Gulabrao Jadhav (65), Shaila Vilas Bhagit (28) and Mushraf Jamdar (55). The identity of the fourth deceased passenger — a woman — has not been ascertained, police said.

The accident also caused heavy traffic jam on the road that led to queuing up of vehicles on both the sides of the road. Police personnel from Talegaon MIDC and Dehu Road Police Station tried to ease the situation which continued until late in the afternoon.
