The judging panel was made up of ECJ editor Michelle Marshall; industry consultant Jean-Marc Flaux (France); director of contract cleaning association BIV Johannes Bungart (Germany); president of contract cleaning association ASPEL Juan Díez de los Ríos de San Juan (Spain); and industry consultant Lynn Webster (UK).

"As a panel we were all thoroughly impressed with the standard of information submitted by all the entrants," said Michelle Marshall. "We were also delighted with the number of entries across the categories, which exceeded our expectations in this, our first year."

She continued: "This level of participation from the industry only reinforces our belief that as a sector we have a great deal to be proud of in terms of initiatives concerning service excellence, client relationships, investment in workforce and creating sustainable businesses.

"We now look forward to welcoming the finalists to Barcelona this month and celebrating their success."

The day starts at midday with a round table discussion over lunch. There are then three conference sessions:

TRENDS IN CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
Chris James, ceo, WAMITAB
Whether you're a service provider, distributor or manufacturer of products - the nature of customer relationships has evolved significantly in recent years. Nurturing, maintaining and managing those relationships is key to business success. We look at the most important trends and offer an insight into possible developments for the future.

TECHNOLOGY
Sandra Sieber, professor, Barcelona Business School.
New smart technologies are affecting every aspect of our lives, and the digital age will inevitably impact on the professional cleaning sector significantly. However, it's all very well having a host of technologies available - the key challenge is selecting the right solutions and using data in a way that brings concrete results to any business. That means better productivity, client/staff benefits and ultimately higher profitability.

PEOPLE
Dr Stephen Wise, associate director, Amec Foster Wheeler
No matter how much technology impacts on the cleaning sector, ultimately it is a business based on people. It employs literally millions of people worldwide. With demographic changes across the world, finding the right people and retaining them is becoming increasingly challenging - particularly in an industry which is perceived is being low-skilled and badly paid. We will look at the wider issues concerning employment and workforce and explore future trends and possible solutions for the cleaning sector.

There is still time to buy tickets for the awards event at the five-star Majestic Hotel in Barcelona on September 29. The delegate rate of €285 includes lunch, round table discussions, three conference sessions, face-to-face networking opportunities, three-course dinner and - most importantly - the awards ceremony itself.

Worldwide cleaning association ISSA is the education partner. The awards dinner cocktail reception before the ceremony is sponsored by ISSA/INTERCLEAN.
