Rampant Dortmund thrash Wolfsburg, Hamburg lose again

Mark MeadowsSeptember 20, 2016

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was twice on target as Borussia Dortmund continued their free-scoring form with a 5-1 triumph at Wolfsburg. Hamburg lost 1-0 at Freiburg to leave Bruno Labbadia exposed while Frankfurt won.

Wolfsburg 1-5 Borussia Dortmund
(Didavi 53' - Guerreiro 4', Aubameyang 16', 62', Dembele 58', Piszczek 73')

Dortmund just cannot stop scoring and made a mockery of Wolfsburg, who had previously not conceded in the Bundesliga this season. Thomas Tuchel's rampant side were 2-0 up inside the first half of the midweek fixture.

The home defense allowed Marc Bartra to stride forward from the back unopposed and he had bags of time to pick out Raphael Guerreiro, who scored with aplomb after four minutes.

Dortmund, who battered Darmstadt 6-0 at the weekend having thumped Legia Warsaw by the same score in Champions League action last week, brought Mario Götze and Aubameyang back in to the starting lineup and the latter soon had his name on the scoresheet.

More generous Wolfsburg defending, plus some smooth skills from the striker, allowed Aubameyang to make it 2-0 after a quarter of an hour.

Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking made a double change at half-time and it paid almost immediate dividends with Paul Seguin setting up fellow substitute Daniel Didavi to make it 2-1 on 53 minutes.

The home side could even have dragged themselves level if new striker Mario Gomez had not again drawn a blank, although he came the closest yet to scoring his first Bundesliga goal since May 2013 after a scramble with Roman Bürki on the line.

As it was, Dortmund increased their lead soon after through Ousmane Dembele but there was a hint of offside about his tap-in. Aubameyang then slotted in his second after 62 minutes with the in-form Gonzalo Castro again laying on the assist.

Lukasz Piszczek headed in a corner for 5-1 to complete Wolfsburg's humiliation.

Dortmund, who saw Bartra limp off and substituted Christian Pulisic at half-time in the only negatives of the night, surge onto nine points with their strong start to the season only punctured by the defeat by RB Leipzig on matchday 2.

They top the table pending Bayern Munich hosting Hertha Berlin on Wednesday.

Freiburg 1-0 Hamburg
(Petersen 70')

Hamburg boss Bruno Labbadia is under mounting pressure after his side lost for the third straight time in a 1-0 defeat at promoted Freiburg.

Rene Adler failed to deal with Vincenzo Grifo's effort from distance and Nils Petersen was on hand to knock in the rebound moments after coming on. Hamburg, who boast just a point in the standings, rarely threatened and a seemingly perennial crisis is beginning again.

Labbadia did not help himself by refusing to give in to fan demands and start creative midfielder Alen Halilovic. Hamburg next host Bayern on Saturday.

Ingolstadt 0-2 Frankfurt
(Abraham 45+2', Oczipka 50')

Frankfurt meanwhile have nine points and are looking good, in contrast to last season when they needed a relegation play-off to survive. David Abraham sent in a bullet header from a corner just before the break to take the lead at Ingolstadt.

The home side again failed to deal with a corner after the break and Bastian Oczipka blasted in with a special strike from distance to seal the 2-0 victory.

Darmstadt 1-1 Hoffenheim
(Kramaric 46' - Oliynyk 90+2')

All the attention before kick-off in Darmstadt was on returning forward Sandro Wagner but it was Hoffenheim strike partner Andrej Kramaric who broke the deadlock just after the interval.

But just as time was running down, Denys Oliinyk grabbed what could be a precious point for Darmstadt come the end of the season.
