Government mulling swift and intensive action against terror groups

Amid speculations on what the possible course of action will be following the Uri attacks, CNN-News18 has reported that a section in the government is advising swift and intensive action against the terror hubs acting out of Pakistan. This may include precisely positioned air strikes or firing from across the border. According to CNN-News18, drone surveillance to can be used to determine the coordinates of terror camps across the border.

However, in that case the threat remains that situation may soon spiral out of control, given the sensitive nature of relationship between the two nations. Both the nations are nuclear powers and India can not risk escallating the relations to a nuke-war like situation.

There also remains the fact that India can never be sure of the precision of such strikes while a retaliation from Pakistan and escalation of situation is definite.

Pakistan can also hit back at a time and place of its choosing: Musharraf

Former Pakistan President and Army General Pervez Musharraf told CNN-News18 in an interview that if India is talking of action at a time and place of its choosing, then it should also consider the retaliatory action. 

“You talk about you can take action at a time and place of your choosing. We can also strike back at a time and place of our choosing, so don’t stop at that but also consider the consequences of your action,” Musharraf said.

US asks Pakistan to follow restraint in its nuclear program

The US State secretary John Kerry told Pakistan to follow restraint in its nuclear program, while he advised both India and Pakistan to cooperate with each other. Signaling zero tolerance for state-sponsored or state-abetted terrorism, Kerry had told Islamabad that it needs to do more on the terror front, according to CNN-News18.

However, the tough talk on terror also came laced with a pat on the back, as Kerry praised Pakistan on action against terrorists on its western front, apparently referring to the clamp down on operations of Tehreek-E-Taliban, which has been active in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where US has considerable interest.

Another encounter underway in Handwara, Kashmir

Amid reports of an ongoing encounter in Uri sector near LoC, reports have now emerged that a fresh encounter is also underway in Handwara district of Kashmir.

US talks tough on Uri attack, warns Pakistan

US State Secretary John Kerry on Tuesday issued a strongly worded warning to Pakistan reiterating that Islamabad needs to prevent terrorists from using its territory, as reproted by CNN-News18. 

It is instructive to note here that in his statement, Kerry has specified that Pakistan needs to act against ‘all’ terrorists thriving on its soil, which is being seen as a reflection of the Indian stand that Islamabad needs to stop discriminating between “state” and “non-state actors” or “good terrorists” and “bad terrorirsts.”

This is one of the strongest statements issued from the US to Pakistan.

Punitive strike in fray?

According to CNN-News18, government sources haven’t ruled out punitive air strikes on the terror groups operating out of Pakistan. However, the exact nature of the said action is not clear. Amid a tough narrative asserted by BJP and a telling silence from Prime Minister Modi, it can be said that the government is going for a calibrated action only after taking into account the fallout of each of its choices.

According to CNN-News18, the RAW and MEA have urged the Prime Minister to act with restraint as the fall-out of a ruthless action can be diplomatically damaging for India.

10 militants killed in ongoing encounter in Uri sector

Two more terrorrists have been killed in the ongoing encounter in Lachipora in Uri sector, taking the total number of neutralised militants to 10, ANI reported. According to CNN-News18, the site of encounter is very close to LoC and the site of ceasefire violation.

Sushma Swaraj likely to raise Pak’s soft approach on terrorism at UNGA

According to CNN-News18, Sushma Swaraj will not limit her attack on Pakistan to the recent Uri attacks but will list out a number of instances where terror groups have been dealt with softly by Pakistan. She is likely to hit at Pakistan for allowing Dawood Ibrahim to operate from it’s soil and giving JeM and Hafiz Sayeed in a free hand.

Rajnath Singh reviews security with NSA, Foreign Secretary

Rajnath Singh was briefed on Tuesday by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and others, including officials from the Defence Ministry, paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies, on the prevailing situation in the Kashmir Valley as well as along the Line of Control (LoC).

The Home Minister suggested that all necessary steps be taken to check infiltration along the LoC and the border areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Gujarat, according to a report in IANS.

Sharif seeks US, UK help to resolve issues with India

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has held separate meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry and his British counterpart Theresa May during which he urged the two countries to help resolve issues between Islamabad and New Delhi. Yet again needling India, Sharif asked the two leaders to ask New Delhi to grant the right for self-determination to Kashmiris.

After the kin of a soldier who lost his life in the Uri attack denied the 5 lakh compensation offered, the state government has now increased the ex-gratia payment to Rs 11 lakh. Germany condemns Uri attack, says with India in fight against terror

German Foreign Minister, on Tuesday, condemned the Uri attacks and said, “Our thoughts are with the families of the murdered soldiers & many who have been injured… Germany stands resolutely at India’s side in fight against terrorism, share the view that every country is responsible for taking decisive action against terrorism emanating from its territory,” the German minsiter said according to ANI.

According to ANI, Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on telephone on Tuesday to condole the terror attack in Uri. Ghani strongly condemned the terrorist attack and conveyed Afghanistan’s support to India. He said that Kabul will stand with New Delhi against all actions to eliminate threat of terrorism while Modi thanked him for the support.

Sushma to corner Pakistan at UNGA

Government is closely monitoring what Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will say at the UNGA meet as the neighbouring nation has clearly indicated it will continue its bid to internationalise the Kashmir issue. Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj is also due to speak at the meeting and according to CNN-News18, she will corner Pakistan on issues relevant to India’s interest.

According to their report, Swaraj will single out Pakistan in her speech and raise issues like Pakistan allowing Dawood to operate from its soil, it’s nationals involved in Pathankot and Uri attack apart from voicing her concern on the Pakistani involvement in the current unrest in Kashmir. It is expected that Swaraj will not shy away from targeting Pakistan on its soft approach towards terrorists.

Swaraj will also take up the human rights violations in Balochistan region of Pakistan.

Fidayeen attack initially planned to target Poonch army base?

CNN-News18 reports, a fresh probe has revealed that a fidayeen attack was first planned at the Indian Army’s 63 brigade in Poonch. Two terrorists were successful in infiltrating and were hidden in a compound that shared teh boundary with the army station, but  but the bid was foiled by the army, according to CNN-News18

Pakistan avoids Indian media

According to CNN-News18, Nawaz Sharif avoided Indian reporters and chose to remain tight-lipped on the Uri attack as Indian journalists pressed him for a comment. Government sources have confirmed that the Pakistan Prime Minister will rake up the Kashmir issue at the UNGA meet.

Earlier, NDTV also reported that one of it reporters were asked to leave the room, where Pakistan’s foreign secretary was holding a press briefing following the United Nations General Assembly. “_Iss Indian ko bahar nikalo” (_Take this Indian out of the room), were teh exact words used in an impolite gesture as the Indian journalist was asked to leave.

Suspicious bag found in Pathankot

According to ANI, a suspicious bag is discovered near an Army unit at Simbal Chowk in Pathankot. The bomb squad has been called at the spot and further details are awaited.

NIA registers case in Uri attack

According to PTI, the NIA team has registered a case in the terrorist attack on the Army base in Uri and the team will reach the sight shortly to collect evidence. Apart from sending the GPS equipment to the US for investigation, the NIA will also collect DNA samples of the four slain militants, who were reportedly the members of terror group Jaish-e-Muhammad.

The army will handover all the weapons, GPS, navigation map of terrorists and other evidence recovered in the post-attack search operations to NIA for further investigation.

NIA will send the GPS & icon satellite set recovered from the combing operations at the site of Uri attack to US for forensic investigation. The probe will help find out what route terrorists chose to enter the army base, and when and how they entered the area, according to ANI. The analysis of the equipment may also help in determining the original location of the terrorists before they entered India.

In Gurgaon, school children gathered to pay homage to the soldiers on Monday, who were martyred in the attack on the Army camp. Eighteen soldiers of lost their lives in the deadly attack that hit army base in Uri on wee hours of Sunday, while over 30 soldiers were injured in the attack. According to CNN-News18, two injured soldiers are said to be in a critical state. Most of the soldiers were burnt alive after their tents caught fire in the wake of the attack.

Beijing reacts with caution to Uri attack

Skirting direct reference to Pakistan and JeM,China voiced concern over “escalation” of tensions and “rising temperatures” in Kashmir after the Uri terror attack and called on India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through dialogue. 

“China opposes and strongly condemns all forms of terrorism. We are concerned about this escalation and rising temperatures surrounding Kashmir situation… We hope relevant parties will have dialogue and consultation to resolve their differences and enhance counter terrorism cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said according to PTI. 

It is interesting to note here that JeM has special significance as Beijing has put a technical hold over India’s efforts to bring about a UN ban on the outfit’s leader Masood Azhar for his involvement in Pathankot attack and India has yet again blamed the terror group for the Uri attack

Netizens want strict action against Pakistan

According to a Twitter poll conducted by ET.Com, netizens felt that it is indeed the time for tough action against the rival neighbouring state. Infiltration bids on a rise: DGMO 

The DGMO told the press in New Delhi that the infiltration bid has increased this year in comparison to the last 3 to 4 years. Of the 110 militants neutralised this year, 31 were killed while trying to cross the Line of Control, which shows the desperation from the other side to infiltrate into Indian, Lt. General Ranbir Singh said.

Bangladesh strongly stands with India to eradicate terrorism

Bangladesh Envoy to India,  Syed Muazzem Ali, offered deep condolence to the martyrs and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured soldiers. He said that Dhaka strongly condemns all acts of terrorism and extremism reiterating that Bangladesh “strongly stands with India as a close friend and neighbour in this tough hour,” according to CNN-News18. 

When asked whether Bangladesh will back India’s bid to isolate Paksitan diplomatically and take up terrorism at the United Nations, he said “we are prepared to cooperate on every front with India to eradicate terrorism.”

Afghanistan condemns Uri attacks, says strongly stand with India in fight against terror

Afghanistan has expressed solidarity with India, stating that the country has also been facing similar attacks on its security forces. 

Shaida Mohd Abdali, Afghan Ambassador to India said, “We fully support PM Modi’s call for a strong & firm action against those who terrorise all people and those who use terrorism as an instrument of foreign police.. We have been seeing this for many years,” according to ANI report.

Nawaz Sharif writes to 5 UNSC member states on Kashmir issue

According to CNN-News18, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has written to five UNSC member states urging action against India on the ‘atrocities’ in Kashmir. Islamabad has written to China, UK, US, Russia and France in a bid to internationalise the Kashmir issue ahead of the upcoming UNGA meeting in New York.

India propagating ‘hostile narrative’ against Islamabad: Pakistan Army

Refuting India’s allegation that Pakistan sponsored terrorists were behind the attack, Pakistan Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif said that New Delhi was propagating a ‘hostile narrative’ against Islamabad. Sharif said that Pakistan was closely watching the situation and was fully prepared to take on India, if need be, CNN-News18 reported.

Following the Uri attack, there were reports of anti-Pakistan protests from various parts of the country. Some BJP activists in Patna, Bihar burnt Pakistani flags in a show of protest against the attack on army base on Sunday while members of Akhand Bharat Morcha raised slogans and protested in New Delhi. 

Unable to win open war, Pak resorting to subversive acts: Prakash Javadekar

Taking a dig at Pakistan for aiding and abetting terrorism on Indian soil, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that since Islamabad couldn’t win an open war with India, it was resorting to “subversive activities”.

Batting for a pro-peace, pro-development approach the minister said, “We want both the countries to go forward on the path of development peacefully.”

Such incidents should be dealt with heavy hand: Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal condemned the attack on the army base at Uri, stating that the country has a decisive Prime Minister who would give a befitting reply to those involved in the terror strike.

Lauding the BJP-led central government, Badal said that the NDA government was fully committed to uphold the sovereignty of the country and protect its borders by foiling such attacks. 

Badal said such incidents must be dealt with a heavy hand to avoid any threat to the unity and integrity of the nation.

A senior police officer pays tribute to the soldiers killed in Uri attack, at a ceremony in Srinagar on Monday. In one of the worst fidayeen attack on the Indian Army in recent years, the death toll on Monday shot up to 18 after another soldier, K Vikas Janardhan, succumbed to his injuries at the RR Hospital in New Delhi.

The chief ministers of various states have announced financial aide to the family of the martyrs, and the Centre has promised stern action against those responsible for the terror attack.

Another soldier succumbs to injuries: Death toll now 18

Sepoy K Vikas Janardhan, who was airlifted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital after being critically injured in the Uri attack, succumbed to injuries today, raising the toll in the terror strike to 18.

Two other critically injured soldiers have also been airlifted to the military hospital in New Delhi.

Modi under pressure to live upto his 2014 poll promise: Show Pak that India isn’t a soft power

Modi on Monday conferred with his senior ministers, security and military advisers and other experts as his government sought to craft an “appropriate response” to Sunday’s terror assault on the Uri army garrison in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, one of the biggest targeting the Indian Army in recent years, and quickly blamed on Pakistan, resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers and substantial damage to military property just a few kilometres from the Line of Control with Pakistan.

With calls mounting from inside the ruling BJP that India should “teach a lesson” to Pakistan — with one senior party strategist Ram Madhav demanding “for one tooth, a complete jaw” — Modi is under pressure to live up to his 2014 election campaign rhetoric of showing Pakistan that India is not a “soft power” and would give a “befitting reply” to any attacks on the country. Expectations of appropriate action were raised when Modi himself said soon after the attack that “I assure the nation that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished”, while the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological fountainhead of the party, said that “terrorists, their masters and their supporters should be dealt with firmly and conclusively”.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also said he had asked Army Chief, Gen. Dalbir Singh, to take action against “those responsible for the attack”.

There were arguments for and against a retaliatory military action, even a “punitive counter attack”, as many military analysts are demanding. There were various war scenarios being drawn out in South Block’s board rooms with one former general suggesting on TV that India should not be seen “pussyfooting” anymore as it had “conventional superiority” and could deal with military exigencies.

With the world watching anxiously, and foreign embassies monitoring the “flashpoint situation” closely, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement that Pakistan will not hesitate to use “tactical nuclear weapons” if the need arose and that “horses should be ready” for action has led to a building up of a tense situation in the subcontinent with unpredictable consequences.

After the spate of high-level visits on Sunday, including by the Defence Minister and the Army Chief, Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi was flying to Srinagar on Monday to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir with the top police and civil officials in the state government, an official source said here. 

The Valley has been restive since the 8 July killing of militant commander Burhan Wani, with the almost unending protests resulting in close to 90 deaths, including that of three policemen, and over 11,000 injuries.
 

Mehrishi will be also call on the state Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Governor NN Vohra. Mehrishi is expected to attend a series of meetings with officials of the state government, army, police and paramilitary forces, the source added.

Three lessons for India from Uri attack

No intelligence failure this time, experts have said but many reports have cited examples which proves that there were serious security lapses. Prakash Nanda,  in this piece, speaks to General Raj Mehta, a military veterans, who said it is really worrisome how and where breaches in security occurred to allow unchallenged access to the fidayeen to the base or camp for so many kilometres inside the Indian territory.

Attackers had key information: Intel sources

Over the past week, at least four major infiltration bids were reported – Nowgam in Baramulla; Poonch where one policeman was injured and two instances of forces foiling infiltration bids at Gurez and Tangdhar. 

Speaking to TOI, intelligence agency sources said that Pakistan was upto something in Uri. Uri sector is where a “changeover of troops was in progress” and according to officials attackers possibly had prior information.

Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to 3 martyred soldiers in Uri from Bihar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia each to three soldiers, hailing from Bihar, who were killed in the terror attack at Uri. Nitish Kumar also announced to accord full state honour to the three martyred soldiers, who belonged to the Bihar regiment.

The martyred soldiers have been identified as S K Vidyarthi from Gaya, Rakesh Singh from Kaimur and Ashok Kumar Singh from Ara in Bhojpur district. The CM said in an official statement that while minister in-charge of the district of Kaimur and Gaya would be present at the cremation of Rakesh Singh and S K Vidyarthi respectively, the funeral of Ashok Kumar Singh in Ara would be attended by Industries minister Jai Kumar Singh.

Kumar expressed deep sorrow over the terror attack that left 17 jawans dead on Sunday. “The country will always remember their martyrdom,” the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, China expresses concern over Kashmir issue

China voiced concern over the “escalation” of violence and “rising temperatures” in Kashmir after the Uri terror attack and called on India and Pakistan to resolve their differences through dialogue and enhance counter-terrorism cooperation.

Expressing shock over the Uri attack, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, “We want to express our deep sympathies and condolences to the affected families and the injured.”

“We have noted relevant reports. We are shocked by this attack,” Lu told media briefing here when asked about India’s allegation that Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Muhammad’s involvement in the attack.

“China opposes and strongly condemns all forms of terrorism. We are concerned about this escalation and rising temperatures surrounding Kashmir situation,” he said. – PTI

Those on sentry duty in Uri weren’t alert? 

During the security review meeting by Rajnath Singh, the possibillity that those on guard duty might not have been sufficiently alert, came up. Those who attended the meeting agreed that it was a serious lapse in view of the lesson from Pathankot where a fidayeen squad of Jaish infiltrated the strategically crucial air base.

Speaking to The Times of India , an Army officer said, “All possible lapses on part of the Army, which was in charge of guarding both the LoC and base perimeter, are subjects of a detailed enquiry.”

‘India just wants to defame Pakistan’

“Assisted by its crafty media, the Indian political and security establishment is notorious for designing bizarre pseudo operations so that it could defame Pakistan in the eyes of the world, muster international support and to cover up its intelligence failures,” The News International wrote. 

Another article in The News International stated that sources in the Pakistani security establishment said that the Uri attack was “a Pathankot-like Indian-staged drama to trumpet its terrorism mantra against Pakistan” and the battalion headquarters in Uri was “chosen deliberately to antagonise the Sikhs from supporting the Muslims’ struggle in Kashmir”.

The Dawn , on the other hand, was slightly less fanatical. It merely accused India of destablising the region.

Pakistan media’s bizarre reaction to Uri terror attack

While the world came together to condemn the dastardly attack in Uri, Pakistan media had a different, and a rather bizarre stand on Sunday’s terror attack. The Pakistan media blamed India for the Uri attacks, saying its timing was suspicious because it coincided with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif heading to the UN General Assembly to talk about Kashmir.

Perhaps the most caustic remarks against India were made in an article in The News International titled ‘Uri attack is an addition to RAW failures’. “The Indian political and security establishment is notorious for designing bizarre pseudo operations so that it could defame Pakistan in the eyes of the world,” said the article.

‘India should increase support for Baloch liberation’

Latest reports say that the Cabinet ministers have suggested that India should Increase support for Baloch liberation and repay Pakistan in kind. However, Firstpost was not able to verify the veracity of this information.

Do not pay heed to Pakistan’s reaction: Kiren Rijiju

India will carefully decide its future course of action in the aftermath of the terror attack in Uri and will not do anything on the basis of what Pakistan says, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

“We must not pay heed to Pakistan’s reaction. Everything is in front of the people. We will take our next steps carefully. It does not matter what Pakistan says,” he told reporters here.

Lacunae which led to Uri attacks needs to be probed: VK Singh

Union Minister and former army chief V K Singh said the “lacunae” which led to the attack at an army base in Uri need to be investigated even as he advised the Indian Army to decide on its response “coolly” with proper planning. “Having seen the army closely, I feel, it needs to be analysed as to what happened there…It needs to be investigated how the incident took place and what were the lacunae,” the Minister of State for External Affairs said.

“…from the army’s side, alertness is required. The Kashmir situation needs to be thought about. The action has to be taken without getting influenced by emotions, anger. It has to be taken coolly and with proper planning,” Singh said. He also said Modi, Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley have already spoken about the action which will be taken.

“(That action) we will leave it to the government,” he added.

Uri is PM Modi’s failure: Shiv Sena

Stating that foreign nations would not do anything to help India on the issue, Shiv Sena editorial said that if Pakistan could use four terrorists to wreak havoc why India cannot use its security forces to strike Pakistan.

The Sena said that merely decorating coffins of martyred soldiers or accepting condolences from foreign nations would not serve the purpose. Instead, giving credence to our security forces is the need of the hour.

“Terrorist attacks have become regular in Jammu and Kashmir. Whose failure is this? Modi may continue to issue warnings but the question is how much and when would Pakistan pay heed to them?” the Sena said.

Modi might not attend Saarc Summit 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the Saarc Summit in Islamabad, according to the sources in the government said. It was learnt that the decision was taken before the Uri terror attack but now after the incident it is almost certain that Modi is unlikely to attend the meet.

It is yet to be known that who will attend the meet from India to place adequate words with proof to suggest that Uri terrorists actually came from Pakistan. The government will also raise the Pakistan terror issues during the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled to be held on September 26 in New York. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will address the UNGA and she is expected to make a strong speech on how Pakistan is using terrorists to destabilize India’s peace and development.

Timing of Uri attack is surprising but a brilliant move by Pakistan

The terror attack at Uri comes at a time when heads of governments are scheduled to meet at the United Nations General Assembly starting Monday. Sreemoy Talukdar of Firstpost argues in this piece that a terror attack at this juncture is surprising, it also is a brilliant move on Pakistan’s part.

Centre may call for an all-party meet

Centre is hoping that all major political parties will be onboard with whatever decision the Modi government takes against the perpetrators of the Uri attack. Reports also said that the Centre might call for an all-party meeting to discuss the future course of action. 

“No deicision will be taken in a hurry,” sources told TV channels. The central leadership also hoped that Uri terror attack won’t be politicised for brownie points.

No point in building international image: Sena tells PM 

“One has to accept that the situation today is worse than what was during the Congress regime. At a time when pro-Pakistan sloganeering is on in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistani flags are being hoisted there, the Centre should dissolve the state government and impose ‘martial law’ there as President’s (Governor’s) rule wouldn’t suffice,” Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“Pakistan has waged an open war against India now, while we cannot do anything except issue warnings. The probe into the Pathankot terror attack too did not result in any action against that country,” it said.

“Why are we searching for proof of Pakistan’s involvement in this terror attack? This proof has no value at the international level. If you (Modi) do not have the courage to strike Pakistan like the US did to eliminate Osama Bin Laden, there is no use of building an international image,” it added.

Sena needles PM over Uri attack, says situation worse than Congress rule

In a bid to needle PM Narendra Modi over the Uri terror attack, Shiv Sena said the situation has become worse than that under the previous Congress regime and if the Prime Minister is unable to strike Pakistan and eliminate terrorists, his exercise of building a global image will prove futile.

The Sena also called for dissolution of the government in Jammu and Kashmir and imposition of martial law in the state to sternly deal with the terrorists and pro-Pakistan elements.

Striking a hawkish posture, Sena said Pakistan has waged an open war against India with this attack and our attempt to gather proof of its involvement will yield no result internationally.

‘Military offensive against Uri terror attack will be knee-jerk’

CNN-News18 reports inside details of the high-level meeting between PM Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and NSA Ajit Doval. According to reports, the leadership said that a military offensive will be a knee-jerk reaction and India might refrain from something like that. The more doable options are an artillery offensive at the Line of Control on terror camps. 

Discussing India’s counter to Uri masterminds, senior Cabinet ministers said that a diplomatic offensive at the upcoming UN meet in New York will be India’s immediate response. “Intelligence-based offensive targetting Uri masterminds is doable too,” sources told CNN-News18.

India diverting attention from Kashmir: Sartaj Aziz

Pakistan on Monday accused India of misleading the world opinion to cover up its “reign of terror” in Kashmir by a spate of “vitriolic” and “unsubstantiated” statements.

“Pakistan has noted with serious concern the recent spate of vitriolic and unsubstantiated statements emanating from Indian civil and military leadership in the aftermath of yesterday’s attack” in Uri, Sartaj Aziz, the adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, said.

He said Pakistan categorically rejects the baseless and irresponsible accusations being levelled by senior officials in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government.

“It is a blatant attempt on India’s part to deflect attention from the fast deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation in Kashmir since the death of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani,” Aziz said.

Jaish terrorists may have had help from mole: Intel sources

Sources in intelligence agencies said that Jaish-e-Mohammad was identified as the perpetrator of the Uri attack after a representative of the terror outfit called up a local journalist in Kashmir to claim responsibility. 

Incidentally, JeM had also emerged as the outfit behind the Pathankot attack but it did not claim responsibility for the same.

On Sunday, after recce at the administrative base, agencies did not rule out help from a ‘mole’ or overground worker in alerting the Jaish masterminds to troop positions within the camp, thus helping the fidayeen maximise casualties, The Times of India report said. 

“A recce was done. The terrorists were aware of the layout of the camp and knew their way around. They had possibly identified the stretches where the fence was not properly manned and accordingly found a safe spot to cut the perimeter wire,” an officer was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

How strong will be India’s reaction?

The government is now gathering evidences to expose Pakistan’s role in it before the Saarc summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad on 9-10 November. DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh said that the terrorists belonged to the Pakistan based group Jaish-e-Mohammed. He said, “Initial reports indicate the role of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). They carried items with Pakistani markings. I already apprised the DGMO Pakistan about the incident and conveyed India’s sentiments over the issue.”

The attack, which comes months after the Pathankot attack in January, has started the debate over how strongly should India react to this provocation which most experts say is stoked by Pakistan. While the high-level meeting between the prime minister and union ministers is underway in New Delhi, speculations are on as to what will India’s response be after the deadly Uri attack.

Two-point breach helped terrorists

According to The Times of India’s Bharti Jain, one breach happened at the Line of Control near Uri and the second at the perimeter of the Army base where the fencing wire was cut. The security establishment is probing the two-point breach.

‘France remains at India’s side in the combat against terrorism’

In a statement, the French Foreign Ministry spokesperson said: “France most firmly condemns the terrible terrorist attack perpetrated on 18 September against an Indian army camp in the region of Kashmir. It conveys its condolences to the families of the 17 Indian soldiers killed in this attack.

“France remains at India’s side in the combat against terrorism. It calls on every State to fight effectively against terrorist groups operating on their territory or from their territory against other countries.

“France also recalls the importance it attaches to bringing calm and the peaceful settlement of disputes in the region of Kashmir.”

Curfew in Pulwama and Baramulla after Uri attack

Meanwhile, Curfew was clamped in Pulwama and Baramulla districts of Kashmir, while it remained in force in some other areas of the Valley including in parts of Srinagar, in view of the separatists call for a protest march to the three districts.

Normal life also remained disrupted in the Valley for the 73rd straight day.

A police official said that curfew has been imposed in Pulwama and Baramulla districts today, while it remains in force in Shopian and five police station areas of downtown (interior city) along with Batamaloo in uptown Srinagar.

Calibrated response from India is a must

Series of meetings are going on in the national capital to come up with a counter-response to the Uri attack which killed at least 20 jawans on Sunday. Top sources told NDTV that the government is clear there must be a calibrated response from India to the attack. 

India, the sources said, could raise the Uri attack at the United Nations General Assembly, which is in session in New York.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning, who in a short while will hold a review meeting with Parrikar, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Rajnath Singh held a separate meeting with Parrikar and Army Chief Dalbir Singh, both of who visited Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday after the attack, and other top officials.

Prioritise re-establishment of stability and prevent any further loss of life: Ban ki-Moon

Condemning the militant attack on an army camp in North Kashmir’s Uri town that killed 17 soldiers, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hoped the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice and all involved will work for the re-establishment of stability and prevent further loss of life.

“The United Nations is following developments closely and shares the concerns of people living in the region for peace,” a statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson here said.

“The Secretary-General hopes that the perpetrators of this crime will be identified and brought to justice,” it said.

He “hopes that all involved will prioritise the re-establishment of stability and prevent any further loss of life. The Secretary-General encourages all stakeholders to meet their respective responsibilities to maintain peace and stability,” the statement said.

‘India has no concrete evidence against Pakistan’

“Pakistan always sought concrete evidence from India to prove its accusations, but it failed to do so,” he said. He said “India has a history of blaming Pakistan immediately after a terror attack, which always proved wrong in investigations”. Zakaria said “India is using different tactics to divert the world attention from the situation in occupied Kashmir”.

The Pakistan Army had earlier demanded “actionable intelligence” to support India’s accusation.

Pakistan rejected as “totally baseless and irresponsible” allegations by India that it was behind the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri that killed 17 Indian soldiers, saying India has a “history of blaming Pakistan” immediately after a terror strike.

Following the Uri strike, India had criticised Pakistan for the latest attack on the Indian Army. Home Minister Rajnath Singh directly blamed Pakistan saying it was a “terrorist state” and should be isolated.

Pakistan rejected as “totally baseless and irresponsible” allegations by India that it was behind the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri that killed 17 Indian soldiers, saying India has a “history of blaming Pakistan” immediately after a terror strike. Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria in an interview to a TV channel said the Indian allegations against Pakistan are “totally baseless and irresponsible”.

Now, France condemns Uri attack

The world powers joined in condemning one of the deadliest attacks on the Indian Army in the recent years. While UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and the US reacted to the attack in which 17 jawans were killed, France on Monday said that the country remains at India’s side in the combat against terrorism.

Global terror has emerged from Pakistan: Ram Madhav

Mehbooba Mufti pays tribute to soldiers killed in Uri

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti led senior Army and police officials in paying tributes at the wreath laying ceremony for the 17 soldiers killed in the militant attack on an Army base in Uri.

“Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti laid wreaths on the coffins of the martyred soldiers at a somber ceremony held at headquarters of the Chinar Corps here at Badamibagh,” an Army official said.

NIA team might visit Uri

A team of National Investigation Agency is expected to visit Uri to gather leads and other evidence from the terror attack site.

Rajnath reviews security situation in western border

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, who postponed his visit to Srinagar, also attended the meeting.

The Home Minister and the top officials also reviewed the security situation across the country, particular along the western border –  from Punjab to Gujarat, the sources said.

Strategies were discussed

Possible strategies to deal with the fresh challenges arising out of the terror attack at the Army Brigade Headquarters, located along the LoC, was also discussed in the meeting, the sources said.

Rajnath reviews security situation

Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the border areas on Monday.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and top officials of the ministries of Home and Defence, Army, paramilitary forces and chiefs of intelligence agencies briefed Singh on the latest ground report in the Kashmir Valley as well as along the Line of Control, official sources said.
