Speaking in pictures

KATHMANDU: Picturesque Nepal comes alive in the photographs of Indian trekker and photographer Sujoy Das. He has captured landscape, Nepali people and culture, and natural heritages in black and white for a photo book titled Nepal Himalaya: A Journey through Time.

The book was launched on September 18. British-born Lisa Choegyal, who has made Nepal her home since 1970s, has prepared the text for the book.

“It is a book of beautiful black and white photos by Sujoy Das. The images are artistic and evocative,” Choegyal shared about the book. “He has been coming to Nepal for more than 20 years and the book is his work of many years.”

The Valley, Upper Mustang, the Everest region, Annapurna Base camp are some of the places he has framed in the book.

The founder of South Col Expeditions, Das — seasoned trekker and photographer — has introduced many trekkers to the Everest and Annapurna regions where he has been photographing for the last 25 years. He has also co-authored and photographed several other books including Sikkim — A Travellers Guide and Lonely Planet Nepal for the Indian Traveller.

As per Choegyal, Das asked her to collaborate for the book about two years ago. She has been involved with Nepal’s tourism and conservation. She worked with one of the pioneers of tourism, Tiger Tops Nepal and Tiger Mountain group, for over 20 years. She is also the author and editor of several books including The Nepal Scene, Kathmandu Valley Style, Offerings from Nepal and South Asia titles of the Insight Guide Series.

In Nepal Himalaya: A Journey through Time, Choegyal has also written a long essay on the history of tourism in Nepal.
