Madurai: A total of 12 lakh voters spread across 100 wards in the city limits will elect their respective councillors in the forthcoming local body elections, which is set to be announced soon. Nearly half of the voters in Madurai district reside in the city limits. The total voters eligible to cast their votes in the local body elections is 24,93,604 with 12,60,522 female and 12,33,604 male voters.
In corporation limits alone, there are 12,38,825 eligible voters.
Releasing the ward-wise details on Monday, collector, K Veera Raghava Rao said there are 1.06 lakh voters in three municipalities of Tirumangalam, Usilampatti and Melur, while 1.08 lakh voters are there in nine town panchayats of Vadipatti, Paravai, Alanganallur, Vadipatti, Sholavandan, A Vallalapatti, Palamedu, T Kallupatti, Peraiyur and Elumalai. Around 10.39 lakh voters reside in rural local bodies including village panchayat, panchayat union and district panchayats. In all, 3,485 polling booths including 1,207 in city have been identified by the district administration and the list has been provided to recognised political parties, he said.
Rao said there is no change in the number of voters from the electoral roll released on April 29, 2016 before the general assembly election. In the draft electoral roll released on September 1, 2016, there was an increase of 2,140 voters, with 1,042 male and 1,095 female voters. However, the increase after addition and deletions made in the meantime, were yet to be classified in the ward level voter's list. The classification would be done soon so as to enable them to cast their vote in the local body elections.
Those who have enrolled after September 1, 2016 would not be able to vote. The collector said the voter's list is made available with returning officers and assistant returning officers, who have already been chosen. Voters can visit the offices and verify their names.
