Kanyakumari: A 51-year-old woman passenger from Rajkot, Gujarat, died after she fell on the platform at the Nagercoil Town railway station early Monday morning. The victim, identified as Batra Nirmala Ben, was among a group of tourists on the way to Kanyakumari in train 19578 Hapa - Tirunelveli Express.
She was trying to alight from the train when the accident happened, police sources said.
"The train was scheduled to reach Nagercoil Town at 8.10pm, Sunday. But it reached around 12.15am on Monday. Passengers were in a hurry to alight from the train as it stops at the station only for five minutes. Batra Nirmala Ben slipped when she was trying to alight and fell down. She suffered a serious head injury and died on the spot," a police officer told TOI.
The body was taken to Asaripallam Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, president of the Kanyakumari District Rail Users' Association, SR Sriram, blamed the lack of amenities at the station for the death. "There is no proper platform at the station. It also lacks lighting, drinking water and toilets," he told TOI. "Though established 34 years ago in the busy Nagercoil - Thiruvananthapuram section, which is earning a handsome revenue, little has been done to develop the station. Recently, 5.5 crore was allotted for developing the station. But tenders, which were called, got cancelled. We appeal to railway authorities to develop the station," he added.
