The chopper crashed because a passenger opened the door and started shooting: Shakib
He is known as the Sachin Tendulkar of Bangladesh and is revered just like Master Blaster in his country, not merely for playing a major role in making his home side one of the best, but also for his selfless, supportive approach in life. So, when reports came on Friday about a chopper carrying Shakib, having crashed near Cox’s Bazar, in Bangladesh, there was a furore all around.
The cricketer escaped narrowly but a man lost his life and three people were injured. In a telephonic, Shakib spoke about the ghastly incident..
The news of your chopper’s crash had millions of your fans worried all over the world...
Honestly, I was totally unaware as the helicopter dropped me at a resort near Cox’s Bazar for a television commercial shoot and returned. Soon I started getting frantic calls from my parents, wife, relatives and friends who were all so worried. That is when I realised that the chopper had crashed. I just couldn’t believe it. I guess life is so unexpected. Anything can happen to anyone at any time.
Reports claimed that your wife Umme Ahmed Shishir was also there with you..
Those are all false reports. I was shocked to read them. Some of them even claimed that my daughter was also with me but the fact is they were at home. I had flown there for work. And the chopper crashed because apparently a passenger opened the door and started shooting with his camera. The pilot and others who have survived the crash have given these statements. It is really unfortunate that a person lost his life.
After such a miraculous escape, people usually get into a shock or become even more spiritual. . .

I am a deeply spiritual man and my faith in the God has been strengthened even more after this incident. I am also grateful to people across the world for their prayers and love. I can’t thank or love them enough.
Speaking of love, your Indian fans adore you like their own...
I also love India as my own. I have played for my national team for the past 10 years and I have also been a part of Kolkata IPL team for almost six years. So, India and espcially Kolkata is my second home. We love same kind of food, speak same language and celebrate same festivals too with equal fervour.
So, you celebrate Durga Puja in Bangladesh?
Of course! Pujo is big in Desh. My home is surrounded by a lot of Hindu homes and we are great friends. Pujo time is spent enjoying luchis and all the special festive dishes along with them just like they celebrate Eid with us.
Any plans to visit India during Durga Puja?
I wish I could. But we have matches lined up, first with Afghanistan and then with England, so it will not be possible this time.
