BHUBANESWAR/BALASORE: A passenger was brutally murdered by some unidentified miscreants in Bhubaneswar-Bangiriposi Superfast train near Betonati railway station of Mayurbhanj district on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Rajendra Kumar Behera, 55, of Anlagunja village under Bangiriposi police limits in Mayurbhanj district. The ruffians killed him by slitting his throat inside the crowded general compartment of the train.

Police sources said the incident took place between Thakurtotta and Jogala village near Betonati railway station while Rajendra was returning from Bhubaneswar to his village. At around 9.30 pm, some of the miscreants got into the train when it halted at Jogala station, a few kilometers from Betonati station. Just after the train left the station, the miscreants slit Rajendra’s throat with sharp weapons and pulled the chain of the train to get down from it, said a co-passenger Paresh Chandra Mahanta.
"It happened within a few minutes. We can’t do anything because the miscreants were armed with sharp weapons," said the passenger.
After getting information from the passenger at Betonati station, staff of the Government Railway Police (GRP) reached the spot. Railway officials also rushed to the Betonati station and separated the coach in which the murder had taken place.
On Monday, senior officials of GRP Cuttack reached the spot and started investigation into the matter. The police communicated with the deceased’s family to cooperate them in the probe. Deceased’s son Kubera Behera, 28, also reached the station. "We have no enmity with others. We don’t know who did this," said Kubera.

The police sent the body to the district headquarters hospital at Baripada for postmortem. "Though the reason behind the murder is yet to be known, police suspect the hand of any relative of the deceased in the incident. During our preliminary investigation, we found that he was not happy with his son-in-law and even a divorce case of his daughter has been pending against the man. It might be the reason behind the murder," said GRP DSP (Cuttack) Sarat Kumar Mishra.
GRP SP (Cuttack) Sanjay Kaushal said the police have started investigating the case from all angle. "After thorough inquiry, we can say the right cause of the murder. We have started a manhunt to nab the culprits," he said.
