Host and medal tally leader West Java dominated the first day of the 2016 National Games, bagging 42 gold medals on Sunday.

Popular wushu athlete Monica Fransisca Sugianto boosted the host province’s medal tally after finishing the women’s taoulu category with the highest score of 9.53 points.

Monika, who performed chang quan, outclassed silver medalist Felda Elvira Santoso of East Java (9.53 points) and bronze medalist Devi Indaryanti of Central Java (9.51) in the competition, which was held at the Pajajaran Post Center.

Proud of his student’s achievement, coach Wahyudin nonetheless reminded Monika to stay grounded ahead of her next challenges.

“She still has few goals to fulfill. The best strategy is to stay alert and agile, and not get carried away,” Wahyudin told The Jakarta Post.

In the men’s category, Achmad Hulaefi of Jakarta won gold with 9.65 points, followed by silver medalist Charles and bronze medalist Aldy Lukman — both from North Sumatra.

West Java also secured its first gold in the cross-country cycling team relay.

The host team comprised Bandi Sugito — who clocked in at 16 minutes and 56 seconds — Chandra Rafsanjani (17 minutes, 43 seconds) and Kusumawati Yazid (22 minutes, 14 seconds).

The silver medal went to Riau, while the bronze was taken by East Java.

From the Cirebon fin-swimming arena, East Java, which is currently third-placed in the medal tally, secured six solid gold medals in diving. Jakarta bagged five golds, while Papua snatched one gold. Meanwhile, the host province only secured two bronze medals.

On the same day, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi made a visit to the Sabilulungan “Sijalak Harupat” Sports Center to inspect the venue.

The sports center is being used to host archery, softball and water polo events for the 19th edition of the games.

Imam said that despite some shortcomings prior to and during the multisports event, the venues were up to a high standard and requested that their good condition be maintained.

When asked about the possibility of West Java hosting several sporting events during the upcoming 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Imam said the plan would need further discussion with the Olympic Council in Asia as the supervisor of the organizing committee.

“It has been decided that Cipule Lake in Karawang will be used for the Asian Games. But more discussions are needed regarding other venues,” he said.

The games, which will run until Sept. 29, were officially opened by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a ceremony that mixed themes of tradition and technology.
