10 Indian animation shorts to binge watch
The country’s animation industry may still be at its nascent stage, but the creative works that have been popping up over the past decades assure that the future for Indian animators and illustrators is bright. Apart from being recognized at various festivals globally, some of these films have also been either awarded or nominated for the Oscars. We bring you a string of brilliantly made Indian animation shorts that are sure to strike a chord…
Sanjay’s Super Team (2015)

This seven-minute film follows the life of a boy, named Sanjay, who loves to indulge in daydreaming when his father sits to meditate.
He often dreams Hindu gods as superheroes. Directed by Sanjay Patel, the film was nominated for the Academy Award.
Aai – a mother (2014)

Directed by Aroop Dwivedi, the length of this film is 14 minutes and it tells viewers the story of a single mother’s unconditional love for her son. The movie is set in a lower middle class household, and concentrates on family values and emotions.
Chasni – the sugar syrup (2014)

Awarded and appreciated at a host of platforms, this five-minute-23-second-long 2D Abhishek Verma flick is based on the sudden upsurge of acid attacks in India, focusing on the physical and mental trauma that the victim has to go through.

Magarwasi (2014)

Revolving around the life of Inspector Lobo and his encounter with the ‘Magarwasi’ tribe, this seven-minute short film was product of the creative pursuits of four Pune-based students – Varun Nair, Kartik Gupta, Eshana Multani and Bhanu Khandelwal.
Keli (2014)

This six-minute film by Ranjitha Rajeevan is elaborated with folk music from Kerala. The plot traces the life of a little girl and how she is enchanted by an ancient rebel and the charisma of his dance.
Komal (2013)

This National Award-winning movie comes with a social message, as it aims to raise awareness about child sexual abuse in India. It is the story of a seven-year-old girl Komal, who is abused by her father’s friend. This 10-minute video is directed by Prashant Shikare.
Fakir (2013)

This Varun Nair film introduces us to a hungry homeless man who finds a new way to earn food. It’s about the struggles of the poor and how self-taught life skills come to their rescue. The film is about two minutes long.
Feel the Punch (2012)

Another award-winning short film, this three-minute-eighteen-second film is made by student-directors Rajesh Thakare and Troy Vasanth. The film is described as a ‘mind-game between a beggar and a commuter who is waiting to board a bus’.
Dhak (2008)

The dhak (or drums) are an integral part of Durga Puja festivities in Bengal. This three-minute movie throws light on the dynamics of this popular element. This film had won a number of accolades and was done as a student project by Rajesh Chakraborty.
Printed Rainbow (2006)

This animation delight is the work of Gitanjali Rao. The 15-minute film narrates the daily life of a lonely old woman and her cat, who, together escape into the colourful world of match box covers. The movie had premiered in Cannes and also appeared on the long list at the Oscars.
