ALLAHABAD: Residents of
Mutthiganj and activists of
Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) took to streets, on Sunday, to protest against the damaged and potholed roads in the city. The protesters burnt effigies of state urban development minister,
Azam Khan, divisional commissioner and mayor.
HYV activists were led by district president
Amit Prakash Singh, who said, "Azam Khan failed to penalize officials entrusted with the task of carrying out development work in the city.
Even the roads in posh areas like Civil Lines, Johnstonganj, South Malaka and a dozen other localities of the city are full of potholes".
Singh said accidents occurred regularly on these roads and commuters are often stuck in traffic snarls during rains as no one wants to manoeuvre their way through the potholes.
"The mayor has not utilised the funds meant for repair of the roads and the divisional commissioner has not held any meetings to supervise the repair work," alleged Monu Gupta, another activist.
