Ramnad lifts ONGC cup

In the State-level volleyball tournament

Ramanathapuram district team lifted the third Thanthai Periyar memorial ONGC Cauvery Cup beating Tiruvarur in the three-day State-level volleyball tournament held here from September 15 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Periyar E V Ramasamy.

In the finals held under floodlights at the Raja’s Higher Secondary School here on Saturday, Ramanathapuram defeated Tiruvarur by 26-24, 25-16 and 25-20 in a fiercely fought three-set match.

After losing closely fought first set, the host won the next two sets to lift the cup.

In the women section, Nagapattinam defeated Karaikal ONGC Cauvery Asset in straight sets – 25-11 and 25-16. Nine teams, each in men and women sections, from the districts of Nagapttinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Ariyalur, Cuddalore and Karaikal ONGC Cauvery Asset took part in the competition.

The tournament was organised by the Ramanathapuram District Volleyball Association and All India ONGC OBC and MOBC Employees Welfare Association.

The matches were inaugurated by Collector S Natarajan and Superintendent of Police N Manivannan on the opening day and by local MP A Anwar Raja on the second day.

Distributing prizes to the winners, Minister for Information Technology M Manikandan thanked the ONGC for sponsoring the tournament.
