NAGPUR:Two men were brutally murdered in separate incidents within a span of 12 hours at different places. While motive behind the murder of 18-year-old Namdeo Kohad at Khapa village on Saturday is not clear, Ajay Warthi, 22, was killed by brother and uncle of his 16-year-old girlfriend at Khasarmari in Dongargaon in the early hours of Sunday.
Ajay’s girlfriend Sheila (name changed), despite threats from her elder brothers and uncle, tried to revive her lover but failed.
Sheila then ensured she revealed her kins’ act to the cops leading to their arrests. Despite losing her love, Sheila sat several hours in Hingna police station giving details of how her elder brothers Dinesh and Jinesh Uikey and uncle Ratan beat Ajay to death.
Sheila’s kin got angry allegedly when they saw the lovebirds in a compromising position at a school. “The girl helped us crack the crime,” said PI Moreshwar Barapatre of Hingna police station. “Police were informed by the Government Medical College police booth after Ajay’s relatives took him there in a serious condition,” he said. It is learnt Ajay lay at the spot for at least three hours after being assaulted.
Cops also recovered a love letter in Ajay’s pocket, penned in Marathi and addressed to Sheila, which turned out to be a crucial clue. Police said Sheila was in a relationship with Ajay, a tile fitter, for around two years. She had met Ajay when in school. She was forced to withdraw from school after her family members came to know of her affair. Yet , the couple kept communicating through letters and also sometimes meet at isolated places in village.
The girl’s kin, sensing their secretive movements, had earlier threatened Ajay about this. On the day of incident, the couple headed to a nearby Zilla Parishad School for a rendezvous. Culprits are learnt to have followed them. “They saw Ajay’s bike parked outside the school before finding the couple in a compromising position near the compound wall of the school. Sheila was told to leave the place by the culprits but she hid herself at some place,” said Barapatre.

Culprits, in a fit of rage, smashed Ajay’s bike first and then beat him with sticks. He tried to flee but was intercepted and beaten with sticks again. He was also stoned. Later, Sheila came out and dragged Ajay to a water tap to wash his face. She wanted to take Ajay to his place but he refused. He also told her to go back before falling unconscious.
“We reached the spot after being informed by a local person and took my son to GMCH,” said Ajay’s mother Bebibai. “His mobile was also missing,” said Nandakishore, Ajay’s elder brother.
In the other incident at Khapa, Namdeo Kohad was stabbed in the chest and back by unidentified assailants. Khapa police have launched a manhunt. Kohad, owned a tea kiosk along with his elder brother Manoj, and was found murdered near Nagar Parishad Chawl by his friend Satish Lanjewar. “He has sustained deep gash in the heart and also some injuries on the back,” said API Praveen Wange of Khapa Police station. On Saturday, Kohad, a resident of Hanuman ghat, had come back to his place for dinner. He later went out but didn’t return. Cops are clueless why he might have been killed.
