Adhir Chowdhury should resign, Trinamool will control whole of Murshidabad soon: TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee

While Berhampore is Adhir Chowdhury’s hometown, he is the Lok Sabha MP from Murshidabad.

WITH TRINAMOOL Congress taking control of Berhampore Municipality on Sunday, party MP Abhishek Banerjee demanded the resignation of state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury for allegedly failing to hold his fort, Murshidabad.

A total of 17 councilors joined Trinamool from Congress, taking the party’s tally to 18. Trinamool initially had two councilors in the municipality, however, one had died recently. With this, Trinamool has three more than the required magic figure of 15 in the 28-member municipality.

While Berhampore is Chowdhury’s hometown, he is the Lok Sabha MP from Murshidabad. On September 9, Trinamool had grabbed Murshidabad Zilla Parishad, which was being run by the Congress. Berhampore Municipality falls under Murshidabad. Last month, the Congress had also lost the Malda Zila Parishad to the ruling party.

“Chowdhury should resign from the party as elected members from his own district are forming a queue to join Trinamool. With Berhampore Municipality, Trinamool now controls five of the seven civic bodies in Murshidabad. The remaining two would also come to us in a month,” Abhishek said after he handed over the party flag to the defecting members at the TMC headquarters in Kolkata.

Trinamool, which now has control over Dhulian, Jangipur, Jiagunj-Azimganj, Beldanga and Berhampore civic bodies, is looking at Murshidabad and Kandi municipalities next to make the district Congress-free as party observer for Murshidabad, Suvendu Adhikari, had said earlier.

Festive offer

Adhikari said: “There is enough room for every one in the party, as a lot of developmental work is to be done in the state.”

Abhishek said the 17 councillors switched sides because they could not accept Chowdhury’s decision of joining hands with the Left Front in the Assembly elections earlier this year. “Owing to the unholy alliance between Congress and Left, this mass defection became inevitable. People like Adhir Chowdhury and (Leader of Opposition) Abdul Mannan are actually ‘Marxist-Congress’. People have seen the real Congress in Trinamool Congress, which is working for development,” he added.

Among the Congress councillors who joined Trinamool, was the chairman of Berhampore Municipality, Nil Ratan Adhya. “It is clear that Trinamool, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, is carrying out development works in the state. We want to make Berhampore a model city under her guidance,” Adhya said.
