Straight talk

Actor Sruthi Hariharan has been consistent in her work and chooses only those projects that not only have a well-defined script but offer her enough scope for performance.

She has three projects that she is working on at the moment and a few more that are ready for release.

She plays the role of a college-goer in ‘Sipaayi’, a project that she had signed right after she accepted ‘Lucia’.

She will also be seen opposite Upendra in ‘Upendra Mathe Baa,’  with Dhananjaya in ‘Happy New Year’ and with Sanchari Vijay in ‘Aarya Maurya’.

In an interview with Nina C George, Sruthi talks about how she manages to strike the perfect balance between her professional and personal life.

What took ‘Sipaayi’ so long to release?

Completing a film and releasing it are two very challenging tasks and ‘Sipaayi’ is a clear example of how it took a long time to complete its production and even longer to release it. It is a story of how a new reporter fights the problems within the system and gets entangled in a host of issues. It’s a complete action-entertainer and I enjoyed working in it.

How is it to work with Upendra?

Upendra sir is one of those who has brought about substantial changes in the way Kannada films are made.

I play his wife in ‘Upendra Mathe Baa.’ The marriage is strained and the story traces how the extended family plays an important part in bringing the couple together. You learn a lot just by having conversations with Upendra.

His philosophical bend of mind and creative ways of presenting a film is quite intriguing. Tell us about your project ‘Happy New Year’?

The film traces the lives of five different people who don’t cross each other’s path until on the day of the New year.

It’s about how different people find a common point in all their stories when they come together.

What was it like playing a rustic role in ‘Aarya Maurya’?

It’s interesting because I essay the role of an urban girl who gets married to a man from a village. She has to not only adjust to a new surrounding but also make amends to her character to adjust to a rural life. The story portrays the struggle she goes through. It’s a project that has been made for an NGO.

Are you acting in any other languages?

I’ve completed working in a Tamil film called ‘Vismaya’ with Arjun Sarja. I am focusing on completing my work in the Kannada film industry.

What makes you happy?

Returning home to my family and spending time with them makes me happy. I don’t discuss my work and the film industry at home. In fact, my parents, don’t even know what my work is like. My family gives me strength and confidence.
