Death of man in police custody sparks tension

Tension prevailed in Navada Kheda village of Agra district on Sunday as villagers recovered the body of a local resident who had been taken into police custody for interrogation in a robbery case. ​

AGRA: Tension prevailed in Navada Kheda village of Agra district on Sunday as villagers recovered the body of a local resident who had been taken into police custody for interrogation in a robbery case.
Shamshabad to Agra city. They also resorted to stone pelting and vandalism damaging at least three police vehicles following which police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the mob.
The incident took place at around 10:30 am.
According to sources, a team of policemen from Iradatnagar and Shamshabad picked up a man and his uncle, identified as Ravi and Bhuri Singh from Navada Kheda village. Though they released Ravi two hours later, Bhuri’s body was found in a pond with severe head injuries on Sunday.
Ravi told TOI, “Cops brutally assaulted us and when uncle Bhuri became unconscious, they threw him near the pond. Later, they released me from the police station.”
During a raid at Bhuri’s home, police also assaulted three of his women relatives, identified as Durgesh Devi, Pappo and Ira Devi. They suffered minor injuries.
After the incident, locals staged a protest demanding that the cops involved in the incident be suspended and arrested immediately.
Senior superintendent of police of Agra, Preetinder Singh, and SP (rural), Akhilesh Narayan Singh, visited the village. The SSP also met the victim’s family and took a written complaint in the matter.

He said, “I have suspended the station officer of Iradatnagar and ordered a probe into the matter. If the policemen are found guilty, then departmental action will be taken against them.” “We are not going to spare those who were involved in stone pelting and vandalism. We will identify the anti-social elements and will book them for rioting and violence.”
Meanwhile, in another remote village of Agra, two groups of villagers clashed over a land dispute. Two men sustained injuries in the incident which took place in Puragoverdhan village of Khandauli area. Heavy police force was deployed in the village to avoid any untoward incidents.
Till the time this report was filed, police were yet to file an FIR.
