SpiceJet aircraft overshoots runway at Tirupati

The flight was to land at the new international airport terminal.

TIRUPATI: Sixty passengers and crew of a SpiceJet flight, from Hyderabad to Tirupati had a miraculous escape when the aircraft overshot the runway while attempting to land at Renigunta airport on Saturday night.

The plane ended up in a marshy area. The flight was to land at the new international airport terminal. Passengers on board included former minister and TD leader Anam Ramnarayana Reddy. The incident was due to a technical fault, sources said.

Following the incident, which happened around 7 pm, the passengers were deplaned and taken to the airport complex in buses. No one was injured in the mishap though passengers panicked after the aircraft came to a sudden halt in an area which was dark.

Speaking to this correspondent over phone, Mr Ramnarayan Reddy said he suspected something was wrong with the flight’s approach as it was supposed to land at Tirupati’s new terminal. Airport officials and police were not available for comment on the incident.
