Tigresses debut, create history

THRISSUR: This year's pulikkali, which marks the conclusion of Onam celebrations in the cultural capital, made history with four women making their debut in the hitherto male bastion.
N A Vinaya, who is an assistant sub-inspector at Ramavarmapuram police camp; Divya, who is a school teacher from Nilambur and Sakeena, a fashion designer were part of the 'Viyyur Desam' team while Rehana Fathima, a government employee hailing from Thrissur was a member of the Ayyanthole Desam team.The tigresses won over the crowd through the powerful footsteps and bold attitude.
Tourism Minister A C Moideen flagged off the event in the presence of agriculture minister V S Sunilkumar and mayor Ajitha Jayarajan.
Over 500 people under ten teams took part in the pulikkali.
Each Pulikkali team had a different tableau depicting mythical characters and epic stories. However, the Ayyanthole team had presented a tableau on Jisha and Soumya murder cases which again become a topic of discussion after the recent Supreme Court verdict. Street dog menace also found a place in the tableau.
A team from BBC channel was also there to cover the event for 'All over the place-Asia' programme. Two crew members dressed as tigers participated in the event as part of 'Ayyanthole Desam' team. Many children too participated in the event dressed as cubs. Sachin, a Class I student took part with his father in the Poonkunnam Vivekananda Seva Samithi team while brothers Adarsh and Adithyan grabbed the attention of everyone with an energetic performance in the Sreebhadra Arts and Sports Club team.
The Corporation had arranged a special pavilion for the physically challenged people in the city for watching the performances hassle-free.
