Hollywood has a long obsession with sharks. From Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film ‘Jaws’ to the most recent ‘The Shallows’, the film industry has always fed audiences fantasies of the sea carnivore hunting down beachgoers.
We have always hoped that Bollywood would produce a desi version of these cult films instead of dubbing them, and we are happy to announce that they delivered. A 1996 film starring Dharmendra, Vinod Mehra, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, Ravi Kissen and Nafisa Ali may have been inspired by Jaws as it has a sub-plot featuring a killer shark. Though filmed in the 80s, the film was released much later.
In the film called Aatank, the story revolves around fishermen at a small fishing village where they are threatened by an enormous, indestructible man-eating shark. However, nothing is impossible for our hero Dharmendra; he not only manages to escape alive from its jaws but literally rips it open. Yes, the shark takes a giant leap of faith and jumps towards Dharmendra, who slits it open with his weapon at the end of the film to everyone’s relief (including the viewers).
Well, we know you won’t believe us till you see it.
Watch the deadly shark’s conquest here and don’t miss out how courageously Dharmendra kills it at the end of the film.
We would like to thank Sajid Khan for letting us know about this Bollywood gem. While applauding the recent Hollywood release The Shallows, he posted about Dharmendra’s epic shark film on Twitter.
