Shoojit Sircar: Big B pulled off the courtroom scenes in 'Pink' effectively
The Amitabh Bachchan-Shoojit Sircar combination first worked its magic in 2015 when 'Piku' turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year. It also went on to win several awards including the national award for best actor for Amitabh Bachchan. The chemistry, it seems, continues to work after the latest movie, 'Pink' garners good response at the box office.

Shoojit first started working with Amitabh ten years ago with 'Shoebite'. Since then, it has been a rewarding association for both. Shoojit loves to call it a 'working relationship' as it develops into a bonding. 'I approached Amitabhji for 'Pink' and he agreed to do this film immediately despite the fact the movie has been directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury,' says Shoojit.

Asked what materials were provided to Amitabh to help him prepare for his character of a lawyer in 'Pink', Shoojit says he was given real life cases to study, arguments, behaviorial patterns of a lawyer not to mention etiquette that a lawyer is supposed to follow inside a court. According to Shoojit, the moment Amitabh gets the script, he behaves like a seventeen-year-old boy. 'He starts reading it, and work on it day and night. At times, he event forgets to have his lunch,' says Shoojit with a smile.

Does he regret not directing 'Pink'? 'I don't. I would rather call myself the coach of the movie. Aniruddha, the director, wanted to make the movie in Bengali. But I suggested that it should be made in Hindi with a subtle narrative structure. But, yes, I have been fully involved in the making of the movie right from the beginning,' adds Shoojit.
Since Shoojit is a perfectionist and eschews melodrama in his movies, the courtroom scenes in 'Pink' were realistic and gut wrenching as the audience could relate to them. According to Shoojit, Amitabh has pulled off the courtroom scenes quite effectively. The film delivers a sledgehammer blow to the audience, with an experience quite shattering. No wonder, some of the dialogues of Amitabh in the courtroom scenes were hard hitting and the movie stays with you long after you leave the theatre.
Any plans of directing the Khans in future? 'I would love to work with the Khans if I am asked to. However, we need to be on the same wavelength to make this possible,' signs off the filmmaker.
