Teen beaten to death at Mazda dormitory

HIROSHIMA -- A young employee of Mazda Motor Corp. was apparently beaten to death at a company dormitory here on Sept. 14, Hiroshima Prefectural Police said on Sept. 16.

According to police, a dorm resident discovered 19-year-old Kyohei Sugano bleeding from the head on the second floor landing of the building's emergency stairs at around 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 14. Sugano was rushed to hospital but confirmed dead shortly afterwards.

An autopsy found that he had died from blood loss after sustaining multiple blows to the head and face. A bag containing valuables apparently belonging to Sugano was found near the scene, and his clothes showed no signs of a struggle.

Sugano was at the dormitory during the day as he was working night shifts.

The seven-story dormitory in Hiroshima's Minami Ward is accessible from the front entrance, where a caretaker is posted. The emergency stairs are inside the dormitory building and are accessible from an emergency exit on the first floor.

An investigative task force was set up at the Hiroshima Minami Police Station on Sept. 16.
