CUTTACK: A newborn baby went missing from special neonatal care unit(SNCU) in gynecology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital under mysterious circumstances on Friday.
Police said a destitute woman had given birth to a baby girl at SCB on September 13 and the baby was undergoing treatment in SNCU since then. But on Friday at around 2pm , when the attendant of the baby came to see her she was not present in the unit.
When the attendant inquired about the baby, the hospital staff was not able to say anything about her whereabouts. The social organization, Basundhara, which had rescued the destitute woman and got her admitted to SCB, has lodged an FIR at Manglabag police station. “Our staff deployed in hospital to take care of the mother and the newborn had feed the baby in the morning. When she came again to see the baby at 2pm, the baby was missing. The baby was stolen from a highly restricted area like SNCU and the hospital staff didn’t even get inkling about it. This is height of carelessness,” said Narayan Shukla, a member of Basundhara.
Meanwhile, police have also started their probe into the matter. “We verified the hospital records and it clearly shows that the baby was admitted in the SNCU. We are questioning the hospital staff on duty to gather more information about the incident,” said Arun Swain, inspector in charge of Manglabag police station.
Despite repeated attempts, the hospital superintendent Pratap Rath could not be contacted for his reaction on the issue.
