Two former Indian cricketers have put in their name for the national selector's role for the upcoming season. Former wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya and fast bowler Amit Bhandari are among the many prominent names to have applied for the role of the senior and junior selector.

With Anurag Thakur at the helm now, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) have been taking a lot of steps in the right direction recently. The latest one is by making this whole process a transparent one. We have seen a lot of former players have shown a keen interest in the job, for which they would get a handsome salary from the cricketing body.

Vijay Dahiya is the chief coach of the Delhi Ranji team as well as an assistant coach with Kolkata Knight Riders.

“Yes, I have applied for the job. I have never attached any expectations with any position. But working as a national selector is an honour. If selected, I will give it my best shot,” said 43-year-old Dahiya.

Dahiya has played two Tests and 19 ODIs for India apart from 84 first-class matches for Delhi and North Zone. Dahiya was part of the Indian team when the selectors were trying out a succession of keepers – he was one of the 5 keepers which had tried out for the Indian team in the 2000-01 season. He was not really effective as he went on to score only one half century during his short stint.

Similarly, Bhandari, who has played 95 first-class matches apart from two ODIs, also confirmed about his application for the post of a selector. Bhandari had an Indian career to forget as he was smashed all over the park during his debut match against Pakistan in 2000. He featured only in one other ODI in 2004 against Zimbabwe after that.

In similar news, Gyanendra Pandey and Gopal Sharma – two former state cricketers from Uttar Pradesh have applied for the job as well.

However, there is some confusion regarding former off-spinner Gopal Sharma’s application as he had already been a national selector once.

“Gopal was a national selector for only a year (2004-05) and after that, the committee was changed. He has applied for the post,” one UPCA official in know of things said.

As we see a lot of former cricketers applying for this prestigious post, it can only mean that the selection committee is going to see a major improvement and hopefully not see any controversies in the near future.
