DALTONGANJ: In a major boost to women empowerment in the state, chief minister Raghubar Das has set a target for establishing 40,000 woman self-help groups (WSHGs) in the Palamu division. Das said 36 blocks in the division have SHGs and asked officials to assist their formation.
Das was here to attend a divisional conference of SHGs from Garhwa, Latehar and Palamu. The conference was held at the police line ground.
Das asked DCs of the three districts to reach out to dalit and tribal villages for this initiative. He was accompanied by development commissioner Amit Khare and Rajbala Verma and other officials.
He urged rural women representatives at the meeting to consider entrepreneurship and send home-grown vegetables and other commodities to other states. He granted Rs 1 lakh each to seven SHGs, encouraging them to engage in healthy competition.
"My government is planning to set up an authority in rural development departments for the promotion of women in villages," Das said. He added that husbands of women mukhiyas and women district council members should refrain from attending official meetings.
Das also recognized the need to ensure women's honour is not under any threat. "The chief secretary, who hails from Rajasthan, told me that a toilet is called 'izzat ghar' (chamber of modesty) in her state. I urge all SHGs to promote the izzat ghar in their villages," Das said.
