THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Footwear and bag materials were gutted after a fire broke out in the store room of a footwear shop at Peroorkada here on Thursday.
The fire broke out on the third floor of the shop around 12.45pm. The top floor was converted into a store room while the first two floors housed sales showrooms. The shop was located in the heart of Peroorkada town and fire and rescue services personnel were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other shops located nearby.
Local residents saw thick fumes emanating from the shop and alerted the fire and rescue station.
Four units of fire force from Chenkalchoola reached the spot and doused the fire within two hours.
The shop belonged to Muneer. "Fire might have occurred due to short circuit. We are yet to affirm the exact cause of fire. No casualties were reported but the entire material stocked in the room was burnt. We could contain the fire and hence it did not spread to other shops," said a fire and rescue personnel.
Peroorkada police said that the shop was open but fortunately there weren't many people in the showroom, which averted any casualty. The fire outbreak at Peroorkada happened within two weeks after a major fire occurred at Rajadhani building at East Fort in which a godown was completely gutted.
