Kalamassery bus stand gets ready

Kalamassery Municipality undertaking project

KOCHI: The long-felt need for the development of Kalamassery is finally coming true with the speedy work on the bus stand on the land allotted by KINFRA near the Ernakulam Government Medical College. Despite many institutions here, bus connectivity was always a problem. The Kalamassery Municipality is undertaking the project coming up on a 70 cent plot at an outlay of Rs 3.25 crore. A shopping complex along with the bus stand is being readied and works have been allotted to Kochi-based SITCO Associates. KITCO are the consultants for the project.

Municipal chairperson Ms Jessy Peter says that she hopes to dedicate the bus stand as a New Year gift to the people of Kalamassery. “We hope to complete the construction work in three months. The good news is that the work has been fast in the past three months since construction began. The bus stand will primarily be a boon to patients and bystanders coming to the medical college and will also boost the development prospects of the medical college,” Ms Jessy Peter said. Fifteen buses will be able to park at the bus stand which will have separate toilet facilities and a waiting shed for men and women.

“We are also using World Bank assistance for the project. The new NAD bus route planned close to the bus stand will make it more useful,” said Ms Jessy Peter. At the instance of former municipal chairman Jamal Manakkadan, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had taken personal interest in realizing the bus stand which will offer more connectivity to HMT, Startup Village, NUALS, XIME, new Kochi Cancer Centre, Naval Armament Depot, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Government Polytechnic, Women’s Polytechnic, Government ITI, Women’s ITI, Food Craft Institute, Productivity Council and St Paul’s College apart from the Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital and Nursing College.
