This graffiti on a white wall, based on the concept of time, has become a major attraction at the Lodhi art district. The artist is Daku, known as a ‘rebel artist’ who paints the walls of the capital without permission and had painted the graffiti Mat Do during Kejriwal’s 49-day government. Daku, who doesn’t wish to reveal his identity, has made this graffiti with, for the first time, the administration’s permission.
Graffiti changes with time
The black-and-white mural comprises metallic stencils of the words, which both reflect light and cast shadows when the sun hits them, malking it a game of shadow and light, like a sundial.
The mural looks different at different times during the day. Early in the morning or late in the evening, all one can see is the white wall, but at noon and around 2-3pm, the words – ‘ability’, ‘balance’, ‘order’, ‘chaos’, ‘perception’, ‘people’ – are spelt out through shadows. Talking about the light-and-shadow act, Daku tells us, "I have used google to understand the movement of the sun. I studied the movement of the sun on my phone to calculate how the shadows would move over the letters and highlight the alphabets."
The meaning of words changes with time
The graffiti also has words like ‘love’, ‘reality’, ‘opinion’, ‘emotion’ and ‘age’. When asked how he chose the words, Daku says, "These words are basically things that change their meaning with time." He adds, "I don’t want to explain much about the shadows and words. I want people to find their own meaning; I want the residents and people who come here to look at the art, read the words and understand the meaning. We take time for granted, but we shouldn’t. The art never looks the same twice and I want people to understand the concept of time through this graffiti."
Daku says that this will be his only grafitti in Delhi based on the concept of time. He is also planning to make one in Bengaluru, but that would be in his signature style – without permission from the authorities.
