Kolkata: Bar singer found dead, police suspect suicide

The body of a 20-year-old bar singer was found hanging from the ceiling of her rented apartment in Teghoria, under Baguihati police station in North-24 Parganas district, on Thursday morning. The victim, Mamoni Gayen, worked as a bar singer at Secret Seven and Downtown Bar. According to sources, she stayed away from her parents.

On Thursday morning, police received a call from the owner of the apartment. They reached the spot and found her apartment locked from inside, following which they broke open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling fan.
No suicide note was found at the scene, police said. “We suspect the woman committed suicide. We are waiting for the autopsy report,” said a police officer.

Mamoni’s elder sister Shefali Gayen lodged a complaint against Munna Rehman, a resident of Bhangar, who was in a live-in relationship with the victim. Rehman had allegedly tortured her for money.

“A case has been registered under IPC Sections 386 and 306,” said Santosh Panday, deputy commissioner of police (Detective Department), Bidhannagar Police Commissionarate.
