Team Ireland wins another medal after Orla Barry claims silver in Rio Paralympics

Orla Barry has won a silver in Rio this afternoon.

The Cork woman claimed the medal in the final of the F57 discus after a fantastic third throw of 30.06m.

The 25-year-old finished behind Nassima Saifi of Algeria to win Ireland's eighth of the Games, meaning Team Ireland has reached their pre-tournament target.

This is Barry's third Paralympics representing Ireland, after flying the flag for the country in Beijing and London.

Minister for Sport, Shane Ross, and Minister of State for Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, both congratulated Orla on her silver medal.

Minister Ross said: "I am delighted to be congratulating another athlete on their success in these Paralympic Games. Orla has brilliantly managed to follow up her bronze medal performance from the London Games with a silver in Rio.

"Her success keeps the momentum going from a wonderful day yesterday. The whole country is right behind the team and wishing them further success in these already successful games."

Minister O’Donovan said: "Another day and another success for an Irish athlete. What a magnificent performance by Orla to achieve her 2nd Paralympic medal.

"After achieving bronze in the last Games, it’s great to see her go one better and get the silver. She came in to the Games with high hopes after winning gold in the European Championships and it’s fantastic for Team Ireland that another medal has been added to their achievements so far.

"I am thrilled for Orla, her family and her club Leevale Athletic. I’m sure the people of Ladysbridge, Cork will be celebrating her success tonight."
