Smartwatches again spot to limelight when Samsung revealed its Gear S3 at IFA 2016 and Apple unveiled Watch Series 2 last week. Apple Watch, the most successful smartwatch runs company’s own watchOS while Samsung Gear S3 runs Tizen OS. Naturally, the common comeptitor for both the watches come from Android domain – but not this year.

According to CNET, smartphone makers LG, Huawei and Motorola have decided not to release any Android-based smartwatch this year. While LG recently announced a version of Urbane with LTE, Huawei and Motorola have not updated their smartwatches for more than a year now. It is unclear whether Android smartwatches have hit a roadblock of any kind.

At Google I/O 2016, the search giant announced Android Wear 2.0 with support for on-screen typing and native apps. LG Watch Urbane was the first to run the developer version but now it is evident that there won’t be an Android Wear 2.0 device from the top Android manufacturers this year. Asus is the only company in recent times to introduce an Android Wear smartwatch. Asus ZenWatch 3 was announced at IFA 2016 with circular display and should be readily available for Android Wear 2.0 update.

According to recent IDC numbers on Q2 2016 smartwatch sales, Apple saw its shipments fell by nearly 55 per cent from a year ago. Motorola, LG and Huawei would be taking a cautious stance here by not introducing any new smartwatches.

Smartwatches are yet to become a must have gadget in the consumer segment. The smartwatches currently available in the market just extend as a smartphone companion by displaying notifications and tracking activities.
