UN allocates $10m emergency funding for Chad refugees

Nairobi - The United Nations approved $10m in emergency funding for Chad-based relief operations to help about 210 000 refugees and returnees from the neighbouring Central African Republic.

The money from the Central Emergency Response Fund will help four southern regions bordering the Central African Republic that have been "marked by deterioration in food security" as relief partners have withdrawn due to a lack of resources, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Wednesday in an e-mailed statement.

The Central African Republic has been riven by turmoil since a 2013 coup by rebels ousted former President Francois Bozize.

Chad is the world’s seventh-largest host of refugees, sheltering almost 400 000 people, including from Nigeria and Sudan, according to the UN.
