Roughly 1,500 yellow moth-repelling lamps light up the night on Sept. 14 at the Okunoya Pear Production Association's pear orchard in city of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, for the harvest season ending at the beginning of October. The pears become juicier with direct sunlight during August, and with the help of the lamps, there is no need to cover the fruit to protect them from insects at night. From the roughly 15,000 trees covering 31.5 hectares, 800 tons of the famous Kaga-brand pears are expected to be harvested and then distributed throughout the Kansai Region. (Mainichi)
