MADURAI: A 40-year-old man, who was attacked by his wife a few days ago, died after failing to respond to treatment in hospital. Following this, Madurai rural police arrested the woman on murder charges and altered the attack case to Section IPC-302 punishment for murder.
Police said the woman attacked her alcoholic husband, using a vegetable cutting knife after a fight broke out between them.
The victim was identified as S Rameshkumar, 40, son of Subbaiah from Kabilan Street in Tirumangalam. He got married to Hepsiba, 38, the accused, only a year ago.
Police said Rameshkumar joined a furniture showroom a year ago, where Hepsiba was working. Since both were unmarried, it did not take much time for them to fall in love, after they met for the first time in the showroom. With support from their family members and relatives, they got married a year ago.
While things went on smoothly for the first few months, they started quarrelling frequently due to Rameshkumar's drinking habit. Police said he used to come home under the influence of alcohol and pick up a quarrel with her. He also used to demand money to consume alcohol.
On September 7, Rameshkumar demanded some money from an amount Hepsiba had got from her provident fund (PF) savings. When she refused to part with it, a quarrel broke out between the couple.
An angry Rameshkumar beat up Hepsiba, who was chopping vegetables. In a fit of rage, she retaliated and attacked him with the knife. Rameshkumar sustained injury on his neck and waist.
He was immediately rushed to the Tirumangalam government hospital, from where he was referred to Government
Rajaji Hospital in the city.
While a case was registered based on a complaint from Rameshkumar's father, Subbiah, the victim died on Tuesday, propelling the police to alter the section and arrest Hepsiba. She was then remanded before a judicial magistrate and put behind bars. Tirumangalam Town police registered the case and conducted inquiries.
