Drunk driver mows down two on NH-24, arrested

GHAZIABAD: Ankur Tyagi, the man at the wheel of the Swift Dzire, was driving back home from work, police said. He has been arrested and booked under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
The two people who he ran the car over were Anand Singh (38), who was working as a driver with a private firm in Noida, and Asha.
The car ploughed into Singh and Asha around 8.30am near the Tigri crossing on NH-24.Singh lived in Sarvodaya Nagar with his family . Eyewitnesses told cops he was driving a Yamaha motorcycle from a road that leads to NH-24 from Sarvodaya Nagar. The car, which was being driven from the Delhi side, rammed into his motorcycle just as he was entering the highway .
Asha, who was walking on the highway after crossing over through a cut on the central verge, was crushed at the same time. Passersby and local residents took both victims to MMG Hospital in Ghaziabad, where they succumbed to their injuries.
“The woman, who seemed to be in her mid-30s, revealed her name as Asha while she was being transported to hospital. Her residential address is yet to be ascertained,“ a police officer said.
The car was seized by the police. Tyagi, who lives near the Nasirpur railway crossing in Ghaziabad, was returning home after his night shift in a private company when the accident happened. A medical test was conducted on him.“Tyagi was found heavily drunk at the time of the accident. We are trying to find out where the woman who has been killed in the accident is from,“ Vijay Nagar circle officer and deputy superintendent of police Indrapal Singh told TOI.
